I specially made this banner for discussions and posts on apps for S60 5th edition phones like the Nokia 5800 XpressMusic and the N97.

First up, Nokia Hongkong has put up a lot of applications for the 5800 on their website.

Apps include Touch Piano, Avatar SMS, Touch Guitar, TVB Widget, Mail for EXchange and Touch Manouver.

If you have the 5800 currently, then go and download these apps NOW!

If you dont have one yet… then you will have to wait for it to be launched in your country and buy it and then install these apps k? lol

Yes… few more days and it will be my 1 month anniversary with the Nokia flagship device, N96.

I guess it’s time I write about the 3 things I love and hate about it.

Let’s start with the things I like on the N96.

- The big screen… I think all phones should have screen as big as this(touchscreens not included).. 2.8″ is what I think should be the standard for all mobile phone screens from now on.. and it better be… or else many of us will have to squint our eyes in order to read SMS or to surf the web.

- The SUPER LOUDSPEAKER… I have never thought a phone can be as loud as this. Once I showed my friend a video on the N96 and he had to give it back to me after like 10 seconds cos he couldn’t stand the ear piercing loudness on the N96 at 100% volume… hahah but it was good though… cos he commented that the sound was damn loud but it doesn’t break… and the bass was good too.

- The new vertical bar shortcuts on main screen… Yes it has been around since the N78 but not my N82. ahha so yea its new to me. With the shortcuts aligned to the side of the screen, I can now put up my nice wallpaper while having the shortcuts on. Very handy. It links to more apps and options in the phone too. Imagine accessing some settings in the “tools > settings > phone > general” with just 2 clicks.

I hate:

- The build quality of the N96… I admit it is now a lot more solid looking then my old N95 but seriously.. it makes no difference. The top part of the phone (the part with the screen) moves about 1mm up and down when its not slided out.  Very disturbing. Other than that, the backplate/cover of the phone is very flimsy and thin that it feels very plasticky

- Super slow… I have upgraded the firmware twice within 1 month of usage. Nokia knew how slow it was thats why they rolled out 2 updates to fix it… but somehow opening new SMS, replying SMS and switching from a running app to the main menu takes about 10 seconds respectively. Sometimes it only takes about 5 seconds which makes me go “WOW, why suddenly so fast?”. haha

- The camera… Somehow I feel that my old N95 took better pictures. At times, when you take photos at dark places, the photo will turn to black and white.. literally… yea I don’t know why this happens but every time I point my phone to a dark place the photo will lose its colour.. and I had to change the white balance in order to bring out the colours again. .. but anyway, the N96 can really take good photos provided if the lighting and ambience is good especially close up shots.  I can say that it surpasses my old N95 and N82.

Skype released their very first java version of the of the famous software for mobilephones sometime ago and recently they have launched a newer version, but it still in Beta stage.

It worked well on my N82 and N96. Eventhough its not a Symbian app, it still works very smoothly as if it was made for the operating system.

With Skype Mobile, you can now chat with your friends in Skype on the go, via 3G, GPRS, Edge or WiFi. You can also direct your Skype calls to your mobile but that will require Skype credits.

Try it and chat away with your buddies while you are not in front of your computer. It’s a nice looking app. Free too. So why not right?

Remember to add me to your buddy list! My ID is “smashpop” :D

Hi all, this is my 6th post on the XpressMusic device.

This is how it looks like in camera mode. On the right you can see 5 keys. Exit, switch mode, flash, settings and options.

That’s me snapping myself with the 5800. lol…

Upon pressing and holding the camera key, the screen turns into a viewfinder very quickly. I’d say its probably 0.5 secs faster than my N82. Auto focus bracket is the same as other Nseries and the camera shutter sound too.

I didnt try recording videos with it.. but there are 2 modes in video recording… standard (4×3 ratio) and wide (16×9 ratio).. nice to play on the 5800 widescreen.

Here’s a video of the 5800 taking a photo of the N82.

Recently I found out something that I have missed all these while, something that I have always seen in my previous Symbian phones but didn’t bother to explore… hahaha… it’s theme effects.

Tools > Settings > General > Personalisation > Themes > General > Options > Theme Effects.

Basically it does nothing more than adding animations to your menus, icons and screen rotation (depending on the theme that you are using).

Speaking of themes… here’s my current favourite theme.

It’s called Nighty Purple by Cuff. I like the dark background, the light purple selection background for icons.

You can download it for free if you like. Just click here.

This is my 4th post on the 5800.

Here are some photos of the device playing a video.

Looks damn good when watching videos on the wide screen eh?

Trust me… I witnessed it and the moment the video was played…. I nearly fainted… cos it was DAMN NICEEEE… not forgetting the super loud stereo speakers.

Now why is the 5800 so conveniently placed on the table? Did you realise it? Haha…

This is because, other than getting the cool casing, this 5800 stand is also provided in the package so that you can enjoy videos on the big screen while holding popcorn on your left hand and soft drinks on the other.

Somehow it reminds me of a photo frame stand. Haha…

OK here’s a video of the 5800 playing video… MUST WATCH!.. oh in the video I will show you where the speakers are… so watch out for that!

Prefer to watch it on Youtube? Click here.

In the video above, you will notice 3 empty buttons on the right side of the screen when the video was played. This is because the software is still under development as the 5800 is still under prototype stage.

Do you want to see more of 5800? Please leave a comment if you do.. or else I’ll go on with some other stuff instead :D

Hi all,

Firstly, I’d like to thank Nokia for inviting me for a special preview of their upcoming device, the 5800 XpressMusic touchscreen phone.

According to Nokia, the target audience for this phone is the mid range market and youths. The price is 279 Euro before tax.

As usual, there has to be a photo of me holding the device. ahah

The 5800 will feature a screen with resolution 640*360px. It’s is also called the nHD screen because it is basically 1/9th of a HD screen. Let me show you a diagram I drew prior to this post.

The 5800 will be the first S60 touchscreen phone from Nokia and it will also be the most advanced XpressMusic device in it’s category.

Some of the features of the 5800 includes the new S60 5th edition and the latest version of the Symbian OS, 3.2mpx Carl Zeiss Optics camera, 30fps DVD-like video recording, dual LED flash and GPS.

Connectivity wise, it supports 3G, Wifi, Bluetooth and USB.

3.2inch wide screen… dual speakers

The top part of the phone spots an on/off button, 3.5mm headphone jack and a micro USB port.

The phone will come in 3 XpressMusic colours… yes you’ve guessed it. haha… red, blue and grey.

As you can see, the right side of the phone places the camera shutter button, touchscreen slider lock and the volume/zoom keys.

2 new innovations I like about the 5800.

- Haptic feedback: It feels very different from the other touchscreens I’ve tried. This one doesn’t feel like vibration. It feels more like erm… a 0.5mm nudge.. which feels a lot more solid than the rest. (Edit: The haptic felt like a general one.. not specifically at the spot you touch)

- Touch media bar key: Can you see the bright little logo next to the word “XpressMusic” above the screen? Thats the touch sensitive key. Once touched, the quick access media bar will appear.. (the red vertical bar in the photo) and gives access to Music, Photos, Share Online, Videos and Internet.

I’m sure by now you would have noticed the 4 little photos on the main screen.

You can actually set the photos to display the 4 most frequently contacted person so when you touch on their faces, the call logs, sms history and RSS feeds will be shown respectively in tabs.

The 2 keys at the bottom of the screen are dial pad and phonebook respectively.

Now ready for some videos?

In this post, I will show you guys 2 videos.

Video 1: Nokia 5800 XpressMusic accessing OVI Share Online.

Prefer to watch it on Youtube? Click here.

Video 2: Nokia 5800 XpressMusic playing music.

What do you think of my preview post?
Do you like how the 5800 looks like?
Leave me a comment to tell me what’s on your mind.

I was not aware of this but now I am. The N96, like the N78… is powered by Symbian OS 9.3, Nokia S60 3rd edition, feature pack 2.

This also means there are A LOT of apps out there which were compatible with the N95 and N82, cannot work on the N96 & N78 now.

… but somehow I have managed to try out a few that works.

- fring

fring is a free mobile VoIP app for you to chat and talk to your friends via the popular messengers like MSN, Skype, Gtalk and Yahoo. fring enables free calls via Wifi, 3G, EDGE or GPRS.

Get fring

- iSync

This one basically works for all Nseries. It helps to synchronise your data eg: calendar, photos, videos from your phone to your Mac.

Get iSync

- Calcium

This is also for most Symbian phones. Calcium is a new calculator app that eases everybody’s life. Haha.. as we all know, the Symbian version that comes with our Nseries is a bit… er… troublesome to use. So try this one and you will get your math solved in no time.

Get Calcium

- Mini Friday

I just installed this yesterday. Seems to be quite fun. It’s actually simple mobile virtual world with many types of spaces like bars, clubs. Customise your own 3D character and chat with everyone now! Watch out, this app does not support Wifi.. so make sure you are on a data plan in order to use this on 3G or Gprs.

Continuing from my previous post, this would be my opinion and thoughts on the gameplay of Star Wars.

The main character in this game, (that guy that you are controlling) moves by himself. All we need to do is to defend him and also make him fight. Haha.. sounds easy.. but its actually not.

The game uses a so called new technology for players to interact with the character in it called Cellweaver.

Cellweaver basically means users perform different keypresses in order for the game character to perform different tricks. The keypresses revolves in the 9 grid positions, up, down, left, right, top left, top right, bottom left, bottom right and center. This can be achived by either using the keypad, or the navigation pad.

In this game, you play the apprentice for Darth Vader and your mission is to kill the remaining jedis and in the end… erm……… yea that’s for you to find out. ahaahha

The game moves from one scene to another and in each scene you will encounter different foes that requires different attack force to defeat them…

Some of the attack forces are Grip, Push, Pull and Lightning. You will also eventually learn some defence forces like Heal, Protect and Speed.

It’s a very very addictive game and I can guarantee that once you start playing this game, you will never feel like stopping.. (unless your phone runs out of battery.. lol)

Here’s a video to show you how exiciting the game is… also listen to music and sound effect yea.

Gameplay rating: 8/10

Hi all, I have been filling up my free time with a lot of light saber action these few days and I have finally completed the new Star Wars game on the N-gage. Woot!

Ok let me tell you about the interface and graphics in today’s post.

The menu has a few layers… starting off with Play, Journal, Ranking, Help, Options, N-gage, About and Exit. Each option branches to sublayers and that again, branch to another sub sub layer.

Moving from one option to another is super fast and doesnt lag at all.(A lot of games do… probably cos this is specially made for N-gage)

Oh one thing I like about this game is that one can set the volume by pressing the volume buttons on the side of the phone.. (again.. 90% of the games out there dont allow tihs)

The graphics is superb… seriously, I have never played a game on a mobile phone with such good quality graphics.. can you see how real it is? the last photo looks just like a scene from Star Wars movie…

The sound effect is superb… every action is matched with a sound with totally no lag at all… the swoosh created by the light saber, the background music, and the explosion sounds… made it feel more like a movie than a game…

Graphics & audio wise, I rate it 9.5/10.

Next post: Gameplay!

Have you got N-gage installed in your symbian phones?

If not, then I think you better download and install the N-gage app now… Cos a new game has just been released and it’s one game you should not miss.

It’s Star Wars: The Force Unleashed.

I am currenly in the midst of playing/reviewing this game and will be posting up my thoughts along with some photos very very soon (after i’ve saved Princess Leia… haha)

For now, watch the trailer… and see what kinda graphics you’ll get if you play the game on your N-gage enabled phones.

Just came back from the Nokia N96 launch event. Nokia also announced 2 new Nseries models tonight. The N85 and N79.

Finally the long awaited Nokia N96 is launched… but it will only be available in the market from the 2nd week of September.

Nokia N85 was annouced and it will be available in Q4 this year.

The N85 is considered a lighter version of N96 as it also has 5mpx camera, 3.5G, DVD like video recording, Wifi, GPS, Ngage support and more.

The one thing that attracts me is the new AMOLED 2.6inch QVGA display. It’s also the first Nokia device to use such clear, bright and low battery consumption screen.

OK now lets move on to N79.

It’s very similar to the N82. Similar specs, 5mpx camera, 2.4in QVGA display, Wifi, 3G and etc. I think the one thing that is nice on this phone is the xpress on colour covers that comes with the phones. Everytime you put on a new back cover, it will actually trigger the correspondent theme that matches the colour of the cover.

Both N85 and N79 comes with 1200mAh battery.. which is a big improvement from what we are currently using in the Nseries phones (900/950mAh)

Nokia Betalabs has recently launched the much awaited Nokia Chat application for Symbian phones.

This chat app takes advantage of the built-in GPS receiver so you can share your locations with your friends.

What can you do with this app? Well, you can message friends, update your status just like Twitter or your facebook status. You can also share your locationn and find friends nearby.

I am currently trying out this application and will update on my findings soon. For now, just add using my nick ’smashpop’

My freind Ben just got himself a black N82 (woot!) and it’s his first Symbian phone.

He then asked me what are the essential apps to have on an Nseries…

Well, here are the 5 ‘must have’ apps for me. (might work for u too lol)

1.
Yes I know the S60 built in browser now can view flash videos like Youtube… but it’s a lot easier if u can just skip all the browser opening, url typing and video searching. Mobitubia is very simple to use. Lists out the popular videos, featured videos and you can search for videos too.

Get it HERE.

2.
I love to chat on MSN and thanks to Mig33, I can chat all I want.. anytime anywhere! I’ve tried a lot of MSN clients and I think this is the best one for me.

Get it HERE or you can point your phone browser to http://wap.mig33.com

3.
Who doesnt love widgets? haha… Widsets allows us to install widgets of all kinds into our lil multimedia computers…(eg:wikipedia, weather, blogs, flickr etc). Search thru the library of widgets and pick them and wallah! They appear on your phone screen!(of course u need a data connection to do this)

Get it HERE.

4.
The built in browser is good, but there ARE some things that it cannot do. Therefore it’s better to have another browser and the best browser for mobile now happens to be Opera.

Get it HERE.

5.
I love Twitter and this is the mobile app for it. It’s called Twibble. With it you can send twitters, direct message your Twitter friends, reply messages and more.

Get it dtsv.dtse_post_70_permalink = 'http://symbian.smashpop.net/5-essential-apps-for-nseries'; dtsv.dtse_post_70_title = '5 essential apps for Nseries'; Follow me on Twitter for more updates! View my personal blog too!

hav you ever needed wifi connection when you are on the run…. but there are no hotspots around?

fret not! now you can have wifi anywhere as long as you have your symbian phone with you! :D

I seriously damn like this software called JoikuSpot.

It’s an app for Symbian phones which enables it to utilise the data connection(3g, gprs, edge) and convert it to wifi so your laptops can connect to it.

There’s no settings needed. Just install, open the app and wallah! your phone is now a wireless access point!

Good thing is that the connection can be shared by more than 1 clients!

gogo and download JoikuSpot now for free…

(make sure u got unlimited data plan… or else dont blame me for your heavy bill lol)

Access millions of YouTube videos at any time right from your mobile phone. This downloadable application puts YouTube in your pocket.

Yes. Youtube has finally came out with the app for Symbian phones.

I have installed it and has been using it since…. ahahah

The interface is in black. Totally opposite of what you normally see using your PC browser… but hey… its cool.

It has most of the features from the web version and the transition of video previews is very nicely done.

One thing I dont like about it is that even though it is able to use wifi to search videos, preview videos and the rest of the other stuff… but it will switch to your GPRS/Edge/3g connection whenver you start to play a video… so make sure u have unlimited data package subscribed. lol

Get the app from Youtube itself at this page
