I recently got the chance to play with something futuristic. Haha. It’s the Cinemizer eyewear produced by Zeiss.

It was at the Nokia Developer Summit where I got exposed to this device that allows users to have 3D experience with stereo sound watching movies(and playing games) on mobile phones.

According to Zeiss website; “Whether you want to watch a whodunit inside the sanctity of your own four walls, or a thriller while riding an exercise bike at the gym – cinemizerplus allows you to enjoy a blockbuster wherever you are”

To get it to work on the mobile phone, we need to have the software installed and the dock that plugs into the 3.5mm headphone jack that has a cable connecting to the eyewear.

The Cinemizer eyewear made me look like Cyclopse…. but the 3d experience was mind blowing… with earphone plugged deep into your ear… one get get immersed into the movie right away.

Here’s a video demonstration of the eyewear plugged onto an N86 that I recorded at the event in Monaco.

Find out more about Zeiss Cinemizer here.

Have you seen the latest Star Trek movie? If you have, I am sure you noticed the Nokia touchscreen device used by young James T. Kirk in the car at the beginning of the movie.

null

The ringtone played before Kirk answered the call is called the “Star Trek Nokia Futurize” tone. Check out this video if you have forgotten about this scene/have not seen Star Trek.

Nokia has actually put up some wallpapers, video clips and also the ringtone used in the movie on www.nokia.mobi and you can access to these goodies using your phone browser.

These contents are actually location dependant, therefore some countries might not be able to get them. If you want the tones, you can click on the button below and download the ZIP file that consist the futurize and dematerialise tone from Star Trek.

I installed AoE3 on the N96 last night and played around with the trial version. I had kinda low expectation of it since I played the Nintendo DS version and got disappointed as it did not resemble most of the gameplays as the PC version.

Glu has done a great job with this one as it has everything we used to play on the PC; campaigns, skirmish and even multiplayer mode.

WE can play the game in landscape mode but more functionality of the game can be accessed using the numpad. I started the game playing the first campaign which the objectives were to collect 200 wood, build a barrack and train 5 Pikemen. As far as I know, we cant really select the number of settlers or the armies as we wish. There are only 2 options; select one or double click to select all of the same type. Guess we need the mouse in order to be able to select, say… only 3 or 4 citizens… but that’s still fine knowing the restrains of the phone keypads.

Gathering resources works the same as on PC. Plucking fruits for food, cutting trees for wood and mining for gold. Only if we have enough of these resources that we can construct new buildings.

Fight scenes are a little too simple as we cannot really see the actions clearly due to the tiny screen, and there is no fighting sound effects during these actions. The experience would be richer if we can have sound effects for every actions in the game like mining, chopping trees and sword fighting.

Watch the video I recorded below.

Overall I think Age of Empires 3 on the N-Gage platform it not too bad and is worth buying. I will buy it because I used to be a big fan ot RTS games like AoE and CnC.

Checkout Age of Empires 3 now on the N-Gage showroom.

At the recent Nokia Developer Summit 09, Lee Williams, Executive Director, Symbian Foundation, talked about the open mobile platform and Symbian.

Some key points mentioned by him:

Symbian Foundation is a community for develoeprs to share ideas and to guide one another to eliminate the need to go through pages of materials, links… without having to download 3-4 different kits and tools and version controlling your own systems and apps.

Symbian foundation helps to create a cleaner access to these resources so that ideas and developers’ creativity does not get diluted.

Here’s one of the slides that he showed, comparing the attribute strengths among the different mobile platform today. These are attibutes that most developers are looking for when producing apps and systems.

Here’s the video of his keynote.

Tero Ojanpera, Exec VP, Entertainment and Communities, Nokia, spent 45 minutes talking about developing for the era of Social Location.

He basically tells the developers how Nokia is opening up the platform so that apps can be built and distributed in order for users to discover. They are also opening up the OVI platform’s API and that will allow 3rd party developers to utilise it and easily plug into the OVI Share network.

Soon users will have the chance to upload photos, videos and other media to social networks like flickr, facebook, OVI etc and this can be done at the same time instead of uploading them to the networks one after another.

Nokia N97 SDk was also released so developers can build apps, take over the front screen and inform users on their latest updates and ‘new things’. The front screen is live and dynamic. Users do not need to open apps to find out details of things they constantly want to know about.

Here’s a video of this talk.

Remember we posted about the Rotary Dialer app for 5800 some time ago? The developer of the app, Jamie Fuller has developed an experimental multitouch game for s60 touchscreen devices and it’s called Space Dancer.

He got the idea from games like “Guitar Hero” and “Dance Dance Revolution” whereby users press a button or buttons along with the music.

The game is complete now although it might still be at alpha stage. I have recorded a video of the game. Check it out.

Visit Jamie Fuller’s blog now for more info and download the game here.

I recently stumbled upon a website called Email with ease. It’s one of Nokia’s moves to get people to familiarize themselves with the latest E series and the messaging service that they rolled out recently.

In the site users can click on “Email Artist” and then compose their own fun emails and the message will be displayed around the E75 which can be sent to friends.

Click on “Email with Ease” bring up the video clips explaining the email services.

The site also links to Nokia Messaging and Nokia Email. Check it out yo!

I was trying to get into the Download section on my 5800 to get the QuickOffice application when I noticed a changed in the icons.

The yellow folder icons are now gone and replaced with light blue ones. Could this change be in conjuction with the upcoming OVI Store? Very low possibility but we shall wait and see.

In the applications folder I see 2 new additions: Mobisystems Diets and Widgets. The former is just an app to calculate and recomment diets and the latter contains all possible widgets that can be installed on the phone. (and currently it only has Accuweather in it).

The rest of the contents are now provided by Jamba, a mobile phone content provider, based in Berlin, Germany which previously trades with the name Jamster!.

Check out the ‘Download!’ folder on your phone now and you might find some interesting stuff there.

Nokia Conversations has posted up a new theme created by the OVI team. This new blue theme comes with it’s own ringtone and message tone. Definitely worth checking out.

Although it’s said to be compatible with S60v3 devices(N96, N85, N78, etc), it can actually be used perfectly on s60v5 phones like the 5800 XPM! (but I couldn’t find the ringtones in my 5800.. hmm)

Do download the OVI Blue theme from Nokia Conversations website yea!

Did Nokia purposely leak this or accidentally?

Found in the Mobile World Congress presskit is a backgrounder on Nokia’s alliance with Carl Zeiss, the optics maker for all the Nseries cameras. A very clear image of the Nokia N86 is found in this PDF File, the successor of the N85, now comes with 8mpx camera! (from SymbianGuru)

Apparently, the N86 has been exhibited in Singapore recently and the photos have been posted in OVI.

Thanks user ‘Gamerz‘ for posting them.

Dissappointingly, Nokia did not include Xenon flash into this 8mpx device.. instead it receives the camera stand from N96… I wonder why Nokia thinks that the stand is more important than the Xenon flash.. hmm.

UPDATE! Nseries Innovation Newsdesk has posted a teaser with a low light photo believed to be taken using the Nokia N86, 8megapixel camera.

Are you excited?

The web version of Nokia’s Mail on Ovi has been launched to public and everyone can now go and sign up for an account. Make sure you do it quick and secure an @ovi.com email address for yourself. Haha.

Some key features:

  • Web application for managing your @ovi.com email. Nokia’s aim is to create a simple and elegant web mail experience. It uses AJAX and Javascript web technologies (like GMail and other modern equivalents) to cut down on page loads and improved usability. For example, you can organise your email into folders via a simple drag and drop mechanism, and, when composing email, contacts are auto-completed based on the contents of your address book.
  • Address book for storing contacts. Currently there is no connection between Mail on Ovi and Sync on Ovi (i.e. between your live contacts and the address book of Mail on Ovi). However this is a limitation of the current beta and the two will be connected together in a later beta or for the final release.
  • Built in spam (optional) and anti-virus filters and settings for auto-reply (e.g. for when you go on holiday) and email signatures.
  • There’s a low bandwidth version of the Mail on Ovi webmail system for use when a broadband connection is not available.

A short demo video of Mail on Ovi.
