SymbianpOp Sharing fun stuff about Symbian
Categories: Updates

Soon after the V11 update (which I think was a very buggy one), comes V12.0.0.24 and it brings fixes to some bugs and improves performance and stability.

According to All About Symbian, the update is available on Nokia Software Updater and Over The Air. but I cant seem to get the update when I check on device updates OTA. Probably it is regional based.

This is the screen you will see if you try to get the update via Nokia Software Updater.

Check out TheNokiaBlog’s video on the changes/improvements from the V12 update.

So have you got your V12 yet? :D

The N-gage application is finally made available to the N97 worldwide. Previously it was just for certain regions. Of course, someone posted the N-gage app online and I tried installing it and it worked BUT I could not connect to the arena probably it was because of the region difference.

All those were history, as the N-gage app can now be downloaded from the official site itself! (and yes, we can go connect to the arena with this version[v1.30 built 1541]).

No games came preinstalled with app so we have to do it by ourselves. As you can see in the screenshot above, I was in the midst of installing Spore and some other games. To get games, just download them from the games page on the site or the showroom tab in the N-gage application itself.

Once installed, all the games will be listed in the games tab and you can access to any of them with just a simple tap. You can also view your account details and game history too.

In order to submit your scores, chat with your friends and view new games, you have to connect to the Internet and it can be done by just accessing the options menu.

Watch this video as I briefly talk about the app and some games.

Well… not to that extend, but the guys at N97Geeks have been putting the Nokia N97 under some stress tests to see how durable it is.

Can the N97 survive screen scratch?

Can the N97 survive wash test?

Or will it still be functional after a few drop tests? Check out the videos below.

Screen Scratch Test

Pocket Test

Paintwork Scratch Test

Wash Test

Drop Test

Conclusion? Nokia N97 survived it all. It is still functional after all these critical challenges. Surprisingly, the screen is unscratchable..Nice.

What do you think?

Just in case if you have missed your scoop on the Search for N contest held 2 weeks ago, here’s another chance for you to win the Nokia N97.

Create a widget [web version, for blog or websites.. not for N97 homescreen], submit, embed and pray hard you will be the selected 10 and win the phone.

Nokia has come out with a site that let’s us create widgets that captures data via RSS feeds, put them in the gallery along with creations by other people in the world.

There are only 4 simple ways to create a widget… that means you can quickly create hundreds of them in just a few minutes. lol

Once your widget is created, you can have the option to embed it in your blog.

Here are some of the little features on the N97 that I like. I have actually complied a list of things that differentiates the N97 from the 5800… but today, I will be showing just 4 of them, hence this post being the 1st part.

Note that these are not obvious/notable features ya.. just something that adds up to the usability of the interface. All 4 features below have been recorded in a demo video at the end of this post.

I Like #1: Sliding Homescreen

We can actually slide the homescreen left or right to hide the widgets. It also serves as a blank screen that displays nothing but the wallpaper and time/date.

I Like #2: Mark Several

Finally! The option to mark several files! 5800 users know that the ‘mark several’ feature is not available for the S60v5 platform and it’s nice to see it again on the N97. Now, a firmware update for the 5800 please?

I Like #3: Video Play Button

In certain folders we might encounter media files like photos and videos. Users might not know which one is a photo and which is a video. Nokia has actually added ‘play’ buttons on each of the video thumbnails and we can click on the button to start watching them.

I Like #4: Favourite Contacts

Now we can set anyone in our phonebook as favourite contacts! Once we have set it, these people will appear at the top of the contact list for easy access. There’s also a favourite contacts widget that we can place in the homescreen for one touch access to call and sms to that particular person.

Check out all these features in a video I recorded. :D

Hi all, here are some of the things about the N97 camera that I came up with after using it for a few days.

Basically the camera interface is exactly the same as on the 5800XPM but of course, the N97 has a 5megapixels lens with Carl Zeiss optics, which is a BIG difference from the Xpressmusic touchscreen.

Once the camera lens cover is slided out, the camera will be activated and it takes about 4 seconds to bring up the live view image on the screen. I think it’s quite slow because it only took about 2 seconds on my 5800.

Camera quality is good, both on the 3.5inch screen and also on my PC monitor. Video camera interface is similar to the one on the 5800 as well, but this only has 3 quality options. VGA, High quality widescreen (16:9) or High quality (4:3).

Overall I think the camera is very similar as the N96. I will be comparing photos from both devices soon, but for now, here are some shots from my N97 and a video at the end of the post. Click on the images to enlarge.

PS: Photos below are all unedited. I only added the text on them.

The Search for N competition has finally came to an end. The final round took place a few hours ago when I posted up the clue that led the 10 of the finalists to The Loaf, Pavilion.

There were only SIX Nokia N97 to be given away… so the earliest six who arrived got one each… and the last 4 to arrive at the secret location got themselves a consolation prize of a Nokia goodie bag.

Here are some photos from the event just now and also a video that took me 1 hour to edit. Do watch it til the end ok? ahaha

Contestants ran towards Loaf one by one, welcomed by David, Hazel, Jo and me.

Ashleigh, Scott and Petrina arrived a few minutes right after the clue was posted up at 11am…. so fast we were not even ready to welcome them.. ahah according to them, they were at Starbucks Pavilion waiting for the post to be up and the moment they saw it, they Googled it and found the answer. Not bad…

Petrina was the 3rd to arrive cos she was running behind Scott and Ash. Hahaha

Darry… the first person to submit his email the moment the 5th clue was made live few days ago.

Ziyan and Calvin got here together… but they were and 6th and 7th to arrive… Since Calvin was in front, Ziyan was very very upset and got kinda pissed… watch the video below to see his reaction.

Alex and Christopher were two of the unlucky ones… they arrived 8th and 9th…. Alex’s upset expression was really upsetting.. ahaha Chris was happy all the way eventhough he didnt win.. thats the spirit!

The winners were then seated, and briefed about the new Nokia N97.. ordered food.. and played with their new toys while eating.

First 3 to arrive got to pick the colour of the N97 they got…. Michael here got the white one… no options.. since he was the 4th to arrive.

The event ended with a group shot… everyone was in… winners, losers *cough*, Nokia reps, and the owner of SymbianpOp, me. lol

Check out the video below!!!

Thanks Nokia and Text100 for making this happen.

What’s the latest hype on Nokia now? Well, its none other than the making of the N97 video.

Well you wont get to see the machines or the parts of the N97 being assembled but you get to hear what the designers and the product managers have to say about how the N97 came about. How they tested the slide out tilt screen mechanism along with very nice video effects, sceneries and a very inspiring soundtrack, all in a 7 minutes clips.

The team behind the creation of the Nokia N97 is a global one with a shared vision that’s highlighted in this video. The project is based in Tokyo, with the industrial designer in Finland, the mechanics team in Tokyo, and software teams around the globe, straddling Boston, Dallas, India, China, Singapore. Many of the key players at Nokia behind the product step in front of the lens in this rare video to tell their piece of the story puzzle that fits together to make the N97, including Tomi Kuparinen, Product Program Manager and designer Shunjiro Eguchi.

Watch it now. Here.

I got to play with the Nokia N97 at the recent Nokia Developer Summit 09 at Monaco and I’d like to say thanks to WenDee and Julien Fourgeaud for giving a very detailed runthough of the device.

Here’s my simple review of it.. after playing for 15 minutes. Heh.

The N97 that I got to play with was the black variant. I personally prefer the white one. Well, the body was very solid as there were no creaks when squeezed. The green and red touch buttons were very responsive while giving haptic feedback when pressed.

One thing that disturbed me was the tilt screen. The angle of the tilt was too steep that I had to bend my hands down a little in order for the screen to face me directly. This also means that I cannot get a clear view of the keyboard since it has been tilted down. Hope you know what I mean.

As the N97 I played was still a pre-production set, the backlight of the full qwerty keyboard was not working but everything else was OK. The speaker was as loud as the 5800. It’s a fingerprint magnet but I am sure it will not be that obvious on the white one.

Check out the video below.

FCC has just released the user manual for Nokia N97, the upcoming Nseries flagship which is to be out in June.

I’ve read through the manual and found some interesting elements.

First off, we can now set timed profiles, which means we can set it to a certain time within 24 hours and it will revert back to the previous profile after the set time.

From the manual we can also get to see the diagrams of how to slide out the full qwerty keyboard. Very simple instructions. hehe.

Here’s also something different from 5800. Users now have folders view in the photo gallery: captured. months, albums, tags, downloads and share online. Seems like the gallery menu has gone back to how it was in the N96 and other S60v3 devices.

Among all, I like this diagram the most. According to the manual, users have to rotate the device around all axes in a continuous movement in order to calibrate the built-in compass. Funny but fun.

Download the user manual in PDF format here.
