Nokia N8 smartphone – http://goo.gl/M157 – Nokia’s highly anticipated short film, ‘The Commuter’ staring Dev Patel from Slumdog Millionaire, Pamela Anderson, Charles Dance, Ed Westwick and shot entirely in mobile HD on the Nokia N8 smartphone.

The groundbreaking film, directed by the McHenry Brothers, was shot in just four days with the Nokia N8 using no back up cameras, with the streets of London and St Albans providing the backdrop to Nokia’s story about one commuter’s eventful journey to work.

Watch the exclusive short film below.

Great storyline, great action scenes, great casts… but notice how the N8 couldnt focus on the faces of Dev Patel & the policeman at the beginning of the video? It’s cos the N8 camera can only focus on objects 2m away to infinity.

Done watching the film? Now here’s a behind-the-scenes video for you to enjoy.

This beautiful handmade treat of a film made by Oscar-winning film makers Aardman Animations – the guys behind Wallace and Gromit – is amazing for two reasons.

It’s now in the Book of Guinness World Records as officially “the world’s smallest stop motion character animation” – and it was filmed using only the new Nokia N8’s 12mp camera and a specially designed microscope!

What do you think?

OK as you may have already known, a Nokia N8 preview session was held in Kuala Lumpur a week ago and I have posted Part 1 of the N8 first look with photos and videos.

This.. is part 2, focusing on Video playback, taking photos & videos and customizing homescreen.

Here’s a closer look at the AMOLED screen with resolution of 360*640px. Very vibrant colours and high contrast. Somehow the 3.5″ screen feels big on the N8, which is good.

Here’s a screen comparison of N8 and the X6. The AMOLED screen is clearly better than the LCD.

The 12megapixel camera with Carl Zeiss optics sits at the back of the phone without an external lens protector. Instead, it has a lens shutter inside… which I think is useless cos we need to protect the glass from getting scratched nonetheless.

The N8 is Nokia’s second device with Xenon flash, with N82 being the first one which was out few years ago. This also means, there is no video light during recording as Xenon cannot be switched on continuously like an LED flash.

The black line before the camera is the speaker. Unlike all previous Nseries from Nokia, the N8 only has 1 speaker. It’s a let down as users would definitely prefer dual speakers on both ends of the phone to enjoy video playback more. Oh well.. nothing we can do about it anyways.

Here’s a video demonstrating video playback, taking photos & videos and customizing homescreen with widgets and wallpapers.

Here are 3 chinese based ads for the upcoming Nokia N8. From the slang of the people in the ads, they sound like Taiwanese.. but who knows.. maybe they are from China or probably Singapore.

Have a look and let us know what you think.

This video incorporates a few N8 users and they share what they can do with their devices.

Chris, a representative from Nokia explaining the features and the advantages of the N8.

A more revolutionary video of what we can use the N8 for. Quite interesting.

Few days ago Nokia Malaysia held a preview session for the upcoming Nokia N8. SymbianpOp was there to check out the device.

Here are some videos and photos + some initial thoughts of the phone.
(This post focuses on Outlook, Homescreen, OviStore, Dial Screen & Photo Gallery. More will be covered in upcoming posts)

The session was conducted by Glen Cha, product manager for Nokia Malaysia. He demonstrated some of the key features of the N8 to us via the LCD, connected to the N8 using a HDMI cable (yes the Nokia N8 has HDMI output) + 5.1 Dolby Surround sound system.

Below is a video of his demo on music player, Ovi Maps, visual multitask and also a brief intro to some Web TV apps. N8 users will be able to watch TV clips on CNN, TV3, 8TV and more.

The Nokia N8 runs on Symbian^3, with improved interface. “There’s no more 1 tap or 2 tap… everything is single tap now”, says Glen.

On first contact, I noticed that the body was very solid, thanks to the 1-piece casing.
The AMOLED screen was very bright and colours were vibrant. The screen is 360*640 pixels aka nHD resolution.
The capacitive screen was very responsive. According to Glen, the screen is made out of ‘gorilla glass’… not sure how true but someone will definitely try smashing one in the future when it comes out. Haha.
The N8 has multiple homescreens. Up to 3. Somehow I feel that 3 homescreens is not enough. Hope Nokia will allow more soon.

I LOVE glossy screen and the one on the N8 is just what I was looking for. Superb glossy screen on high contrast, vibrant display. The dial screen has also been improved on Symbian^3. It looks more compact now and the placement of the keys are very easily accessible with 1 hand.
If you have phonebook entries, the names will appear as you type out numbers on the dial screen. Great way to save tapping phone numbers.

Ok you can see how some of the features look and work on the Nokia N8 in the video above.
Watch it and if you have any comments and questions, please leave them at the COMMENTS area below.

Nokia just announced a new device powered by the new Symbian^3 platform, the Nokia N8. It is launched with a new breed of camera to compete with the current point and shoot digicams in the market.

From the specs, I’d say that this Nokia N8 is the best Nokia camera device ever as it comes with a 12-megapixel camera with Carl Zeiss optics and Xenon flash. The camera sensor is larger than most of the sensors in current camera phones and also digicams out there, so expect photos with good noise control from this new N8.

The N8 can also capture HD videos at 720p and has the ability to edit them within the device itself. Watching videos is also great on the 3.5″ HD capacitive touchscreen. This is the first Nokia device to have HDMI output to you can plug it to your HDTVs to share photos and videos with your friends. Other than that, the experience of watching videos on the N8 is also different as it has Dolby Digital Plus surround sound and is ablt to hook into a dedicated Web TV application for access to news and entertainment on the move.

The N8 also has messaging and social networks features. Access live feeds from your Twitter and Facebook accounts from the homscreen itself. You will be able to comment, reach and post photos and statuses with one touch. As usual, the N8 comes with free global Ovi Maps walk and drive navigation with support in more than 70 countries worldwide.

The Symbian^3 powering the N8, is a new and enhanced version of the current Symbian OS and it now supports gestures and multitouch like pinch to zoom. Other enhancements are; 3 customizable homescreens, improved 2D and 3D graphics for faster and more responsive UI.

The N8 comes with 5 eye catching colours and will cost about €370 before tax and subsidies. The Nokia N8 is expected to ship in the 3rd quarter of 2010.

Stay tuned for more into on Nokia N8!
