SymbianpOp Sharing fun stuff about Symbian

One of the reasons why every phone that I change to is a Symbian OS operated phone… is because of the “Switch” feature. If I’m not mistaken, Nokia added this feature to their S60 phones since the N95.

What’s Switch? Here’s a scenario.

You are using an S60 phone, say N95 or N82 or N78 or N96 or 5800…. and then you bought a new S60 phone… say… N86.. or N97… and you are frustrated cos you have no idea how to transfer all your data (contacts, SMS, MMS, media, etc) from your old phone to your new one.

Switch is your solution. It has been lying deep inside S60 phones for a while now and I see a lot of people are still unaware of this great feature.

To access Switch, go to Settings > Connectivity > Data Transfer > Phone Switch. (The location of Switch varies… if you don’t find it here, try looking under tools or utilities folder)

Switch allows you to transfer data like Contacts, Calendar entries, SMSes, MMSes, Notes, Bookmarks , Photos and Videos from one S60 phone to another. Usually the the transfer (via bluetooth) takes about 3 to 5 minutes only (depending on how much data you are transferring)

Here are 2 screenshots from the Switch menu on N97. How do you get Switch to work? Follow these simple steps:

1. Switch on bluetooth on both phones.
2. Select “send” or “transfer” on your old phone (should be the 3rd button on the Switch screen).
3. Select your new phone from the “bluetooth devices menu”.?
4. Click on “accept transfer” on your new phone and WALLAH!

It will then begin transferring and after a few minutes, your new phone will have every single data from your old phone! Try it!

What do you think of this feature?

If you do own these one of these 3 phones than you are in for something nice.. ahah

Nokia just released some audio themes that you can install and it totally modifies your ringtones, sms tones, alarm tones, slide up and slide down tones etc…

“Audio themes feature allows you to personalize the user interface sounds of your phone. Audio themes are offered in packages which contain several sound files of a common theme. The packages contain usually the normal profile sounds (e.g. ringing tones, message alerts, clock alert, calendar alarm) but also sounds for phone handling (e.g. fold open, fold close) and menu events (enter menu, leave menu).

Your phone supports audio themes if you can find this icon in the menu (personalization/themes). If your phone supports audio themes you can download additional theme packages from this page.”

Download 5 of the audio themes here. (Right click and select “Save link as”)

Nokia_Audio_theme_Electricity.SIS
726.40 KB

Nokia_Audio_theme_Hardrock.SIS
768.60 KB

Nokia_Audio_theme_Jazz.SIS
646.10 KB

Nokia_Audio_theme_Safari.SIS
715.30 KB

Nokia_Audio_theme_Videogame.SIS
296.10 KB

To Install:
Download a theme by clicking a corresponding package. If you are using your mobile phone for downloading, the browser will automatically start to install SIS-packages after the download is completed. You may also download themes to your PC and then transfer them to your phone or install them using PC Suite.

To Uninstall:
Installed themes may be removed using Application manager on your mobile phone. ‘Remove’ option in Audio themes application removes only themes saved by the user, not the ones installed as SIS-packages.

I was not aware of this but now I am. The N96, like the N78… is powered by Symbian OS 9.3, Nokia S60 3rd edition, feature pack 2.

This also means there are A LOT of apps out there which were compatible with the N95 and N82, cannot work on the N96 & N78 now.

… but somehow I have managed to try out a few that works.

- fring

fring is a free mobile VoIP app for you to chat and talk to your friends via the popular messengers like MSN, Skype, Gtalk and Yahoo. fring enables free calls via Wifi, 3G, EDGE or GPRS.

Get fring

- iSync

This one basically works for all Nseries. It helps to synchronise your data eg: calendar, photos, videos from your phone to your Mac.

Get iSync

- Calcium

This is also for most Symbian phones. Calcium is a new calculator app that eases everybody’s life. Haha.. as we all know, the Symbian version that comes with our Nseries is a bit… er… troublesome to use. So try this one and you will get your math solved in no time.

- Mini Friday

I just installed this yesterday. Seems to be quite fun. It’s actually simple mobile virtual world with many types of spaces like bars, clubs. Customise your own 3D character and chat with everyone now! Watch out, this app does not support Wifi.. so make sure you are on a data plan in order to use this on 3G or Gprs.

Hi boys and girls, today we are going to learn about thickness.

See this image below.

Do you know which one is the thickest?

OK some of you guys might want to know how is the experience like watching videos on the N85…. before I give my opinion, let’s watch a very educational clip of a video being played on the N85.

Watching video on the N85 is great, with the AM OLED screen and the stereo speakers, I can really imagine me watching videos on the device in the future (if i happen to own one).

The speakers are very loud but the sound never breaks.. which is good. The screen response rate is very fast, resulting in very clear videos. Probably cos the video I played was encoded well… but nonetheless, its a great device to play videos…. hmm now where’s the kickstand when I need it the most.

So how much similar is the outlook between the N96 and the N85?

Some very notable difference: The separator on the N85 keypads bulges out while the N96 keypad is flat. I actually prefer the one on the N85 cos I can at least feel the keypad and it allows me to send SMS while I’m driving. haha.

Other than that, the navi wheel looks exactly the same, so as the positions of the buttons… but of course the screen on the N85 is smaller.

What about the N79 and N78?

To me, the N79 actually looks more like the N82. The N79 is white, multimedia key is located on the left, navi wheel is totally different from any Nseries and the 2 softkeys + red and green buttons are actually quite ugly.

Anyways, this is a video the gallery on the N85 being scrolled through using the navi-wheel.

I got to re-experience the new Nesries models yesterday along with some of their siblings. I had the N78, N79, N82, N85 and the N96 all on the table.

As you can see in the photo, N79 and N78 has almost the similar length(or height, for some people) and the N85 to the N96.

I was focusing more on the N85 yesterday. I realised in this prototype model, the key presses sometimes does not trigger the actions and I had to press a few times.

The screen, well once again i’d like to say.. that its the best screen i’ve ever seen on a Nokia. The colour is super vibrant, very realistic and very clear. I had to set the N96 screen to the brightest in order to catch up with the N85’s screen which was just set to medium brightness.

Here you can see the 3 candybar Nseries. Can you see how must smaller and thinner the N79 is compared to the N82? All these 2 models have the same 2.4″ screen.

Here’s a video to show you the clarity, brightness and the colour on the N85 screen.

I was actually schocked to see the menu icon animation… never expected Nokia could do this. haha.

Try to hear the sound effect when the slider is pushed up. Another surprise for me cos previously I didnt hear it when I played with it at the N96 launch.

Next up. More videos!

According to Symbian Guru, May 7th 2008 might be the date when the N78 will be released.

It could actually be the release date for the black N82 too but since there are aleady some black N82s around the net… I guess it will be released between now and May 7th.. and it seems more appropriate for the N78 to be launched in May since it was announced to be released in Q2 2008 anyways.

Hope this is real and then we’ll get to play with the N78 soon. ahahahha

What say you?

At the Nokia Showcase 08 that I just went to few hours ago, Nokia launched a few services and some new devices.

- Nokia Maps 2.0 Beta:
This new version includes features like routing with stopovers and saving routes. Users can also now switch between bird eye view, traditional view and the brand new satelite view. It also features slowmotion navigation for pedestrians.

- Share on OVI:
It is a new community portal that lets users to share all media types like videos, photos and many more. Users can easily upload media from mobile devices, email or the web. For more info, click to A href=”http://share.ovi.com” target=”blank”>

The 4 devices announced today are:

- Nokia N96 Multimedia Computer

What’s new in this device?

- it has a 2.8″ screen (which looks Super big in real life)
- 16GB of internal memory (and the capability to support external memory cards.. up to 8GB)
- Supports video formats like MPEG4, WMV, FLV

One of the N96 on demo in the showcase.

- USB 2.0… transfer speed is 5-10 times faster than N95… wwowowo i like. lol
- built in DVB-H live TV feature
- 5megapixel camera with Carl Zeiss optics… no Xenon flash tho…. but it has been compensated with 2 LED lights.

- it has a stand that pops out from the camera at the backof the phone so users can watch movies by resting the phone on the table.
-with the built in A-GPS, users can now Geotag the photos taken with the N96.

Here’s a video I recorded

for more info, click HERE

- Nokia N78 Multimedia Computer

What’s new in this device?

- This is the successor of the famous N73 and this devices combines music, navigation and photography with the benefits of mobility.
- It now comes with A-GPS with free Nokia Maps.
- This model also has Wlan! I bet N73 users are going to upgrade to this. :D

The N78 has a built in FM transmitter.. this means you can set a frequency (let’s say 110.9FM so your car or home radio can tune to the frequency and play the music from the N78)… seriously.. this is one superb featurs that i’d like my N95 to have ahahaha

I’d say that this is the 2nd best Nokia device after the N96…. and would suggest anyone planning to get the N82 to wait for this one… but you might lose the Xenon flash tho… cos this device is still using the normal LED light.

- Nokia 6210 Navigator

What’s new in this device?

- It’s the successor of the current 6110 Navigator and this one has the latest Nokia Maps 2.0 with free voice navigations.

- It is the first Nokia phone with a built in compass so users can use it to see directions when they r on GPS. When users turn the device, the map will automatically maintains it’s orientation.

- I personally think that the compass feature is cool but the rotating of the map is very slow. Nokia should do something about it.

A video of the Navigator

- Nokia 6220 Classic

What’s new in this device?

- It comes with 5megapixel Carl Zeiss optics camera with Xenon flash!
- Built in A-GPS allows users to geotag the photos they take.

The 6220 actually has similar features as the N82. I dont see any difference between the 2 devices yet.

More info soon! :D
