SymbianpOp Sharing fun stuff about Symbian

OK as you may have already known, a Nokia N8 preview session was held in Kuala Lumpur a week ago and I have posted Part 1 of the N8 first look with photos and videos.

This.. is part 2, focusing on Video playback, taking photos & videos and customizing homescreen.

Here’s a closer look at the AMOLED screen with resolution of 360*640px. Very vibrant colours and high contrast. Somehow the 3.5″ screen feels big on the N8, which is good.

Here’s a screen comparison of N8 and the X6. The AMOLED screen is clearly better than the LCD.

The 12megapixel camera with Carl Zeiss optics sits at the back of the phone without an external lens protector. Instead, it has a lens shutter inside… which I think is useless cos we need to protect the glass from getting scratched nonetheless.

The N8 is Nokia’s second device with Xenon flash, with N82 being the first one which was out few years ago. This also means, there is no video light during recording as Xenon cannot be switched on continuously like an LED flash.

The black line before the camera is the speaker. Unlike all previous Nseries from Nokia, the N8 only has 1 speaker. It’s a let down as users would definitely prefer dual speakers on both ends of the phone to enjoy video playback more. Oh well.. nothing we can do about it anyways.

Here’s a video demonstrating video playback, taking photos & videos and customizing homescreen with widgets and wallpapers.

After days of pondering about the newly announced Nokia N900, I seriously think that it has the potential to take on Nokia’s Nseries line for at least 4 years before the launch of the new Symbian^4.

The hardware specs are top of the line that is unmatchable by most of the devices out there.. 800×480 resolution screen is what Internet devices supposed to have as they can view entire websites without the need to scroll left and right. The processor is also something worth mentioning. TI OMAP 3430: ARM Cortex-A8 600 MHz, PowerVR SGX with OpenGL ES 2.0 support. More features you can read about here.

Some Maemo OS features include:
- Live Multitasking: activate the task manager and you can view all running applications in the small LIVE thumbnails.
- Panorama homescreens: from the video below, we can clearly see the multiple homescreens switching by just swiping on the screen.
- Firefox browser: yes I’ve mentioned this before and I am still very excited and would love to try it as soon as I can. It supports full Flash 9.4 (not flash lite like most Nseries) and AJAX.
- Integrated contacts & messaging: with Instant Messengers integrated into your contact list, every text message or IMs will get the threaded conversation look.

The list of features just go on and on.

One drawback though. There isn’t any available applications for Maemo5 yet since its still new. Hope Nokia will be able to engage more developers to come out with exciting apps and games for the N900.

For now, check out this hands on video that shows off its LIVE homescreens and browsing capabilities.
