My aunt who is using the Nokia N96 had some difficulty updating firmware as she does not have a computer.

When she told me about it I told her that she can actually update it’s firmware over the air.

Now for those who are still updating firmware via the Nokia Software Updater, probably you can try this.

Go to menu, click on ‘Tools’.

Go to ‘Utilities’.

Then click on ‘Device Manager’.

In there, you will see the current firmware version and some extra information.

Then go to options, and click on ‘Check For Updates’.

If there is a newer firmware version for your phone model, you will be prompted to download and install it. Do so, and the phone will install and restart by itself… then you’re done!

Be sure to backup your important data first… although you may not need to so if you are using N96 cos updating firmware does not erase contents anymore.

(This OTA firmware update thing works on most new Nseries too. So give it a try if you own one.

Been asking a few of my friends and most of them:
- doesn’t know that the phone firmware is upgradable
- doesn’t know how to upgrade the firmware

So here’s a step by step guide to do it.

1. Download the latest version of Nokia PC Suite and then the Nokia Software Updater. In the websites, select your phone model and click on “Download”. Then install both softwares.

2. Plug in your phone and select “PC Suite Connection” on the phone when prompted.

3. Open the Nokia PC Suite. By right, it should be able to detect that phone that you have just plugged in. Click on “Backup”(the top left icon) to backup all your phone data and settings first.

4. This is the backup screen.

5. Once done, open Nokia Software Updater via the PC Suite or from your PC’s Start menu.

6. You will see a welcome message and a reminder saying something like “make sure you update your phone data and content!” or something like that.

7. Click thru a few Next and OK buttons and you will see this screen. At the bottom left you will see your current phone firmware version and the availability of a new one. Click “Install” and wait for the whole process to complete. Then you’re done.

It’s a very easy step by step process that I would recommend everyone to do. Check on the NSU frequently to see if there are any new updates. :D

Good luck!

Wow Nokia must have been trying hard to make the N96 bugless eh? Cos there is yet another firmware upgrade(v11.101) for the flagship model after the last update 3 weeks ago.

Seems like there isn’t any big fixes in this version… just some ‘networking’ related bugs fixed. So you can choose to skip this if you think the current firmware serves you well enough. :D

Nokia has just released the new firmware for Nokia N78… version 12.046.

Finally! N82 latest firmware is out!
The latest version is V20.0.0.62.

I have just updated my N82.

The new update includes:
1. Built in Flash Lite 3 in the browser, so you can view flash files like Youtube.

Clicking the video will open a full screen player.

2. Geotagging feature is now built into the camera function allowing you to switch on GPS and geotag photos that you take.

Does this mean you have to wait for the GPS to lock onto the satellites before you take a photo? hehe

3. More stable software and some bug fixes.

4. Web runtime (widgets)

When you go to the desktop version of Youtube website, you can now freely click on any videos and it plays straight away.

It even has this full screen mode which activates when you click on a playing video.

It automatically switches to landscape mode once you choose full screen.
