I cant believe what I saw when Fring’s twitter message popped up just now. It says “Fring for 5800 here now!”

I quickly clicked to their blog and saw the latest post about this. Clicked on the link and 5800 was in the supported device list. Hehe

From their blog:

OK boys and girls. Fingers and thumbs at the ready. It’s here… fring for the new super sexy Nokia 5800 touch screen device.

And before we go any further, a big shout out and thanks to those fringsters who were part of the early access group – your feedback has helped us create a fantastic fringing experience, tailor-made for the 5800’s touch screen capability and cool new features.

Check out the latest video they recorded introducing Fring for 5800 XpressMusic.

YOU GET A ROTARY STYLE DIALER ON 5800 TOUCHSCREEN! LOL!

Jamie Fuller, a homebrew coder from UK has actually produced a rotary dial applicaton that works on the Nokia 5800 XpressMusic! He made it out of his free time just for fun. The application vibrates when the dialer is rotated.

Once you have done entering your friend’s phone number (by that time I think you have already wasted 5 minutes of your life.. but in a fun way) you can press Call and it will actually call that friend of yours!

P/s: Just make sure you don’t accidentally dial the wrong number.Haha.

Visit Jamie Fuller’s blog and download Rotary Dialer now!

Nokia Hongkong has recently added a few games into the Applications page for Nokia 5800. Famous games like sudoku, mahjong and big2 are now playable on Nokia’s s60v5 touchscreen devices.

Some of you might get the on-screen keyboard when the game is opened. This will affect the gameplay as it covers half of the game screen.

To remove the onscreen keyboard, go to Settings > App Manager > Installed apps > Find the game that you have just installed > option > suite settings > on-screen keyboard > OFF.

Click to Nokia HK and get these games now!

I was surfing around the net and I found a forum in weird language and some member of the forum posted the file of the beta version of Fring for S60v5!!! Hahahaha and I quickly installed it.

It’s still in beta version and has bugs with MSN. I checked out Fring.com and seems like they will be launching the final version in a few weeks time.

Check out these screen shots I just took.

Once opened, the super big Fring logo is displayed and it says BETA Version. Then we get to choose which messenger service to connect to, as seen in the screen shot above.

Once selected and connected, your contact list will be displayed in 3 categories(as usual) online, busy and away (all services will be merged into 1 list). We have the option to call, send file, chat and many more.

The individual chat screen looks like this. Tapping on the text field will bring up your chosen input method. There are 3 big buttons at the bottom too. Call, send files and send message.

Wanna try out this Fring beta for Nokia 5800? CLICK HERE

I have tried it to connect to MSN and Fring starts to close and open repeatedly… but it works fine when I only connect to GTalk and Facebook. So you might not wanna use MSN on this version of Fring for now

I’ve been trying out Buddycloud for a few days now and I think it is a very very good app.

It allows you to update your friends on what you are currently doing (kinda like Twitter) but better!

Buddycloud adds context to the places you visit in the real world and makes it fun and easy to share these on sites like Twitter and Facebook. You can bookmark and tag locations that mean something to you. For eample: Home, The Pub, Joe’s House and Favourite Coffee Shop.

It tell’s your friends where you went, where you are now, and where you are going next! (That’s of course if you allow your location to be updated in your status.)

As you move around, Buddycloud automatically places you back at previously saved bookmarks, and updates your Buddycloud friends, Facebook and Twitter. It also shows you other people and places nearby. Short status messages can also be pushed into twitter.

Buddycloud is also about knowing where you were in the past and future. A simple future location can also be set. A simple example:

  • Status message: Wow, that was a long week. Anyone up for a pint? (also pushed to Twitter and Facebook)
  • Previous place: Work
  • Current place: On the road in Southwark
  • Next place: The Anchor Pub

One thing I really like about this application is that it constantly updates the list of people nearest to me so I can make friends with other Buddycloud users in the same city, town, state and even country! (See how it tells me the distance between me and another user in Muar, Malaysia.)

Buddycloud is slightly different to other friend-finder type services. It uses multiple location sources. Cell Towers, WiFi, GPS and bluethooth can be used in combination. This means that it works well indoors where GPS based solutions fail. It also incorporates group chats so that you can chat with other people in the area.

I clicked on the 4th tab and I see lists of groups that I can join in the conversation… with this feature, I can chat with anyone anytime anywhere! (make sure you have unlimited data plan so you wont get charged a bomb by your telco)

Here’s a screenshot of one ofthe groups I was chatting in.

Buddycloud is not only for Nokia 5800, it is also supported by all Nokia Nseries and other Symbian phones like N96, N73, N95, 6210, and even Samsung Innov8!

Get Buddycloud now!… don’t forget to add me! My ID is “smashpOp”… or if you are in Malaysia, just click on the “friends nearby” tab and you will see my name there.

Go download it now!

Was waiting for Fring to come out with a version that supports the 5800 when I found the original MSN app produced by Microsoft itself made for S60 5th Edition on China’s Mobile MSN website.

It looks exactly like the MSN we use on our PCs… with nudge, send file, smilies and handwriting feature.

Very stable app I’d say. Fullscreen MSN rocks! I have never used such great MSN app on any previous S60 phones before so I rate this one 9/10. Haha.

Do check out this app for S60v5… means 5800 now and soon, the N97.

Also, join Malaysia’s 5800XPM Facebook Group too if you own one.. or planning to own one.

Forum Nokia has reccently released a full touch driven painting application for S60v5 (in this case, the 5800) and it serves the purpose of demonstrating the capability of touch painting but since its a fully functional one, we can actually download and install and use it without any problems.

I’ve actually tried it as you can see in the above screenshot, it has some basic options like pencil thickness, colour, undo, clear screen and has some custom shapes too.

Download it now from Forum Nokia.

Let’s have a look at the 5800 video recording quality.

I personally love the ability to record 16:9 widescreen(640*360) videos and that should be the default mode for everyone. aahaha… but I have also mentioned that the video recording is quite bad when its done indoors.

Lets have a look at videos I took yesterday using the different colour modes available, Normal, Sepia and Black & White. (Videos are not edited.. only added background music and captions…. but videos might be compressed a bit)

Normal mode… highest quality

Black & white… highest quality

Sepia mode… highest quality.

Now let’s have a look at how bad the video is when taken indoors.

IT’S THAT BAD. First time i record videos as grainy as this.

So what do you think? Can the 5800 satisfy your video recording needs?

I helped my mum to get herself a 5800 2 days ago and she let me use it for a few days to test and to help her set up the phone (so that she doesnt need to go thru the hassle)

Well after 2 days of using the 5800 XPM, I have to say that I love and hate it at the same time.

LOVE:

- The high resolution screen: It’s one of the best screens I’ve seen so far for video playback and I have been watching my movies and podcasts with it whenever I have the time.
- The haptic feedback: The little vibration never fails. I feel it everytime I press a key on the screen… now touching the buttons or typing on the keyboard does not feel like touching dead glass anymore.
- The keyguard switch: I just love to lock and unlock the phone now as the switch is placed at the spot where my thumb is and it’s super convenient unlike my N96, the keylock switch is at the top of the phone.
- The media bar: It’s the shortcut to all my media! Photos, videos, music, web, share online… Thanks Nokia for adding this feature.. hehe.

HATE:

- Video recording: I have never seen a DVD-like video recording as grainy/noisy as this one! Seriously.. The videos will only look good if they are recorded under bright sunlight.. and bright sunlight only…. anything other than that you will notice graininiess in the video.
- Mark several: Do you know that in order to mark several photos/contacts in the gallery you have to go thru this? > (options > mark/mark all > mark > click on a photo > go back to options > mark/mark all > mark > click on another photo… ok I think you know what I mean by now)

More soon! :D

I just got a package from Nokia this morning. It’s an invitation to the Nokia 5800 XpressMusic launch in KL.

Here are the details. It’s an open event so anyone who is crazy about the touchscreen device can go and have fun.

In the package there’s a pair of stripe sleeves too! Seems like all the media will be doing some stripstripe dance at the event. Haha

Oh by the way, here are some high quality shots of the 5800 XpressMusic done by DailyMobile.

Omg this is madness! I don’t know about you but I think this might be the best app for Nokia touch devices so far.

Nokia Beta Labs has rolled out this awesome app called Handwriting Calculator. This app allows you to write out your calculations on the screen and it is smart enough to convert and understand your handwriting and produce the math solution at once.

Watch this video to find out how to work with this brilliant calculator.

Check out Handwriting Calculator and download it for your Nokia 5800 or N800 now!

I have the sudden urge to write a post to recap the launch of the 5800 XPM launch that took place in Hongkong recently.

Here goes.

On 24th November 2008, Nokia held a launch event featuring 3 famous HK celebrities, William Chan, Lam Fung and Charlene from Twins.

Here are 2 videos taken at the event.

General video covering the performances, the model and the phone.

Cantonese narrated video report done by Scoop TVB.

Some close up photos of the 5800 at the launch.

On 29th November 2008, a Nokia 5800 parade cum celebration was held at night in conjunction with the 5800 going on sale when the clock strikes midnight. Below are some photos.

At midnight, everyone was already queueing to buy the 5800 at phone shops.

This is CRAZY! (All photos above supplied by Keith.)

On 30th November 2008, someone who was at the midnight event bought the 5800 and posted photos of his experience and unboxing process on the net. Check out the photos below.

“Its 11:54pm. I m waiting 4 my 5800 to come^^”

“Yeah! Got You!”

“5800 and accessories in the package”

Thanks hidetoshi for sharing his experience.

So there you go! Super Coverage Post: Nokia 5800 Launch in HK.
