Let’s have a look at the 5800 video recording quality.

I personally love the ability to record 16:9 widescreen(640*360) videos and that should be the default mode for everyone. aahaha… but I have also mentioned that the video recording is quite bad when its done indoors.

Lets have a look at videos I took yesterday using the different colour modes available, Normal, Sepia and Black & White. (Videos are not edited.. only added background music and captions…. but videos might be compressed a bit)

Now let’s have a look at how bad the video is when taken indoors.

IT’S THAT BAD. First time i record videos as grainy as this.

So what do you think? Can the 5800 satisfy your video recording needs?

I helped my mum to get herself a 5800 2 days ago and she let me use it for a few days to test and to help her set up the phone (so that she doesnt need to go thru the hassle)

Well after 2 days of using the 5800 XPM, I have to say that I love and hate it at the same time.

LOVE:

- The high resolution screen: It’s one of the best screens I’ve seen so far for video playback and I have been watching my movies and podcasts with it whenever I have the time.
- The haptic feedback: The little vibration never fails. I feel it everytime I press a key on the screen… now touching the buttons or typing on the keyboard does not feel like touching dead glass anymore.
- The keyguard switch: I just love to lock and unlock the phone now as the switch is placed at the spot where my thumb is and it’s super convenient unlike my N96, the keylock switch is at the top of the phone.
- The media bar: It’s the shortcut to all my media! Photos, videos, music, web, share online… Thanks Nokia for adding this feature.. hehe.

HATE:

- Video recording: I have never seen a DVD-like video recording as grainy/noisy as this one! Seriously.. The videos will only look good if they are recorded under bright sunlight.. and bright sunlight only…. anything other than that you will notice graininiess in the video.
- Mark several: Do you know that in order to mark several photos/contacts in the gallery you have to go thru this? > (options > mark/mark all > mark > click on a photo > go back to options > mark/mark all > mark > click on another photo… ok I think you know what I mean by now)

Even though it is still not out for most countries, Nokia has already released a firmware update(v11.0.08) to fix quite a number of bugs in the current version.

I just got a package from Nokia this morning. It’s an invitation to the Nokia 5800 XpressMusic launch in KL.

Here are the details. It’s an open event so anyone who is crazy about the touchscreen device can go and have fun.

In the package there’s a pair of stripe sleeves too! Seems like all the media will be doing some stripstripe dance at the event. Haha

Omg this is madness! I don’t know about you but I think this might be the best app for Nokia touch devices so far.

I have the sudden urge to write a post to recap the launch of the 5800 XPM launch that took place in Hongkong recently.

Here goes.

On 24th November 2008, Nokia held a launch event featuring 3 famous HK celebrities, William Chan, Lam Fung and Charlene from Twins.

The Nokia touchscreen phone was released silently in Moscow without any big posters or ads being shown and yet the Moscow Flagship Store sold out its entire stock for the 5800 Xpressmusic within just 30 minutes!!! OMG! In addition to that, 900 people had submitted their names in the waiting list.

How I wish that the guy in the photo was me… having the 5800 in my hands at the cashier when everyone staring jealously behind him. heheehehhee

Among the buyers, some camped outside the flagship store for DAYS and on the day the 5800 went on sale, over 150 people were queuing outside trying to get in. Some who were super desperate even tried bribing those people queuing to help them get the 5800 first.

5800 FASTER COME TO MALAYSIA CAN!?!?!??!!?!?!?

Eldar Murtazin, #1 Russian telco analyst and chief editor of Mobile Review was the first to mention that the 5800 went on sale at the store stirred up a big discussion among Russians.

Some quotes from Eldar’s blog: “Sales assistants in the shop don’t remember such a situation. The demand exceeds the supply now so much that those (retailers) who bought the model in bulk have begun changing their attitude and are trying to order more and more. I can’t recall a similar situation; it is an interesting turn of events. And the last funny thing - looks like in the first week of sales this product can sell in bigger volumes than iPhone at official launch. Though it is wrong to compare the products which differ in price… The way of Nokia 5800XpressMusic has begun”.

We know that the 5800 XPM comes with a 3.2mpx Carl Zeiss optics with autofocus… but how does the camera perform? Is it capable of shooting nice photos?

When Nokia announced that the 5800 XPM will come with a 3.2megapixel camera with Carl Zeiss optics, I was stunned… cos originally, I didn’t expect it to come with an Nseries level camera.

Anyways, when I got to preview the 5800 back in September, I tried taking some photos using the camera and I have to say, even with its very early firmware, it could take very good shots.

At 3.2megapixels, the 5800 can take photos up to 2048*1536pixels in resolution. That’s big enough I think (although it’s better if it’s a 5 megapixel camera but that also mean the price will increase).

Now let’s have  a look at 2 photos shot using the 5800.

Some of you might be worried that the photos do not look good.. but with some editing, a good photo will eventually become a great photo.

Edited brightness, contrast and blurred the sides of the photo a little. Now isn’t that a great photo taken using the 5800 XpressMusic?

Bear in mind that the original photo looks great… but you can always make it look better with some editing.

Looks great? Haha… added saturation, increased levels and added a little sharpness.

Hi all, this is my 6th post on the XpressMusic device.

This is how it looks like in camera mode. On the right you can see 5 keys. Exit, switch mode, flash, settings and options.

That’s me snapping myself with the 5800. lol…

Upon pressing and holding the camera key, the screen turns into a viewfinder very quickly. I’d say its probably 0.5 secs faster than my N82. Auto focus bracket is the same as other Nseries and the camera shutter sound too.

I didnt try recording videos with it.. but there are 2 modes in video recording… standard (4×3 ratio) and wide (16×9 ratio).. nice to play on the 5800 widescreen.

Looks damn good when watching videos on the wide screen eh?

Trust me… I witnessed it and the moment the video was played…. I nearly fainted… cos it was DAMN NICEEEE… not forgetting the super loud stereo speakers.

Now why is the 5800 so conveniently placed on the table? Did you realise it? Haha…

This is because, other than getting the cool casing, this 5800 stand is also provided in the package so that you can enjoy videos on the big screen while holding popcorn on your left hand and soft drinks on the other.

Somehow it reminds me of a photo frame stand. Haha…

OK here’s a video of the 5800 playing video… MUST WATCH!.. oh in the video I will show you where the speakers are… so watch out for that!

In the video above, you will notice 3 empty buttons on the right side of the screen when the video was played. This is because the software is still under development as the 5800 is still under prototype stage.

This time, let’s look at the different types of input methods on the 5800.

Basically there’s 4:

- Handwriting (suitable to be used if you are not writing English)
- Full qwerty keyboard (for 2 hands usage)
- Mini qwerty keyboard (it can be dragged to any part of the screen, suitable to be used if you are left handed)
- Numeric keypad (same like the typical phone keypad… good for.. erm.. driving? LOL)

This is my 2nd post about the new 5800 touchscreen music phone from Nokia.

Let’s talk about one of the accessories that comes with the 5800.

The casing.

It’s a hard case, that feels a bit rubberish… not quite sure of the material used but I just love the look of it.

Here’s a closer look at it. As you can see, the tiny holes allows us to catch a quick glimpse of the screen so if there’s a notification of any sort, we will get to see it.

Now gaming.

The 5800 comes with 2 games.

Bounce.

It’s a 3d version of the famous bouce game from Nokia. In this game, you control the movement of the rubber ball by sliding your fingers across the screen. Slide up to move the ball forward, slide down for backwards, slide left to turn left and slide right to turn right. Double click and you can make it jump… very useful when you need to jump across moving platforms.

Grand Raging Thunder

Note: This is not a screenshot of the version from 5800. This is a racing game that is controlled by tilting the phoen left and right, utilising the built in accelerometer. Watch the video below to see hwo this game is played on the 5800 XpressMusic.

One more thing I have to tell you… N-Gage is not supported in this device. So if you are an N-gage player, then think if you really wanna get this 5800 ok.
