ALERT ALERT! A damn useful app is emerging and everyone in KL, Malaysia should get it!

It might just be one of the most useful app on your phone alongside Gravity!

Thanks to the guys at Nerdattack, we will be able to check out traffic conditions in the city before we leave the office, go for parties at night or going to work.

If I’m not mistaken, the app is currently only supported on S60 v5 touch devices so if you are using a Nokia 5800, N97, 5530 or N97 mini then probably you should get it when it’s out on the OVI Store.

The widget has a very simple and straight forward interface. Once it’s launched, a list of street names will appear and with just a tap, traffic images will be displayed.

*Live images are grabbed from ITIS btw.

Check out these screenssssssss.. damn nice right? See how the arrows are toggled by just tapping the arrows icon on the top right of the screen.

According to NerdAttack, the app has been submitted to OVI Store and is awaiting approval. Wait for it yo! I’ll try to update u guys once the app is up.

Many of us are using Symbian touch devices like Nokia 5800, Nokia N97 etc. Many of us are also using messengers like MSN, GTalk, Yahoo and Skype.
So how many of you are actually chatting on these messengers using your phones? I know I do.

These are my top 3 favourite chatting/messenger apps for S60v5 devices. We shall analyse them in 3 categories: Interface, Usability/Functionality and Stability.

Showing only 3 apps does not mean I have not tried other apps like Nimbuzz, IM+, Agile Messenger etc.. just that they are not as good as these 3 here

3rd place: FRING

One of the most famous messenger app is Fring. It’s available for multiple platforms like Symbian, iPhone etc. It comes with many features like Facebook and Twitter integration, friends finder, file and photo sending, Fring calls, etc. I used to like it when I was using the N96 but the touch version is too cluttered and it disconnects from 3G very frequently.

Interface: 2.5/5
Usability/Functionality: 4/5
Stability: 2/5
Total score: 8.5 out of 15

Download from Fring.com
______________

2nd place: MSN Messenger

MSN China has did it once… building an MSN Messenger app for users. It was great as it has 90% of the compute version of MSN Messenger… but for a period of time, it didn’t work and thus the news died down after that.

Fret not! The app is now brought alive again and is again usable on touch devices! I love the interface as it resembles the original MSN, has sound alerts and other features like contacts profile photo, search contacts etc. One thing I dont like: The buttons and text are too small for fingers to touch.

Interface: 4/5
Usability/Functionality: 3/5
Stability: 3/5
Total score: 10 out of 15

______________

1st place: Palringo

Palringo was famous with it’s push-to-talk apps back in the N95 era. They have slowly evolved into a messenger app and now they support most of the messengers out there like MSN, Yahoo, Gtalk, Facebook etc. The interface is very simple, loads very quickly and easy to use. It has never got disconnected from 3G since the day I started using it til now. IT still has features like sending photo and voice(utilising their famous push-to-talk) technology.

1 thing that i dont quite like is that it lacks of the ’search contacts’ feature.

Interface: 3.5/5
Usability/Functionality: 4.5/5
Stability: 5/5
Total score: 13 out of 15

Download from Palringo.com

The most popular Nokia touchscreen XpressMusic device has been turned into the new 5800 Navigation Edition this time and will be available in the market starting 3rd quarter of 2009 (notice the XpressMusic label is still on).

What do you get with this 5800 NE? A lifetime of voice-guided Drive and Walk navigation licenses for your region. Sweet :D

The 5800 Navigation Edition comes with all your guidance software needs as it comes with an in-box car charger (the one that comes with the N96) and Nokia car kit for you to mount the device to your vehicle.Apart from the voice-guided navigation (including valuable local traffic warnings), the latest version of Ovi Maps comes pre-installed, which allows you to search nearby points of interests and check out weather reports etc.

Check out this demo video of the Nokia 5800 Navigation Edition.

The device is expected to be available in the 3rd quarter of this year and the estimated price is about 285 Euro before tax and subsidies. (Should be a little bit more expensive than the 5800 XpressMusic initial pricing)

What do you think of the device? do you like the chrome stylings?

Yay to another widget to add to the collection.

Russell Beattie has created a very simple search widget for N97 and 5800, called Q Search. Q is short for Quick. So basically you know roughly what this widget does. To provide quick search.

Russell also added the ability to the widget to be added to the N97 homescreen. According to him, this widget only took him about a couple of hours of work and it only has 30 lines of code. Wow.

Once the widget is launched, you will see a javascript pop up that let’s you enter your search query. Adding a letter and a space before the search text lets the widget know where you want to search from. G = Google, W = Wikipedia, V = Video(Youtube), I = Images(Google), T = Twitter and D = Definr Dictionary.

Press OK after typing the search text will open the browser. Here’s a sample of the result after i searched for “G Symbianpop”. (Search Google for ‘Symbianpop’)

Download Q Search Widget here.

What’s the buzz around these days?

It has to be none other than the new 5800 upcoming firmware update.

It is believed that the update will add kinetic scrolling, widgets and enhanced homescreen similar to the recently announced Nokia 5530 XPM.

It should look like this if I’m not mistaken, 5530 homescreen + 5800.

As much as we are excited about the kinetic scrolling feature, it only works partially. The homescreen (contacts bar), contact list and the web browser. Well, better than none at all, right? :D

Other updates that comes with the firmware are improved response time and camera performance. The new firmware is expected to be out soon after the launch of the 5530 XPM. So be patient and wait for it yo!

Just in case if you are unaware of the kinetic scrolling and the new homescreen (with contacts bar) of the 5530 XPM, check out these video below.

Moubail has brought us some widget games like Match’em and Checkers.

This time around they brought us DeviceInfo widget! (Made for Nokia 5800 XPM and N97)

It’s a free widget that basically tells us things running in our phones that we usually do not see from the phone interface.

The widget now has an updated version and it supports features as stated in the image above.

Other features include displaying

  • IMEI code
  • WLAN Mac Address
  • Phone model
  • Firmware version
  • Manufacturer
  • Product type
  • Bluetooth status
  • Vibration status
  • Autolock status
  • Autolock timeout
  • Screensaver timeout

Here are 2 screenshots I grabbed from the DeviceInfo interface I was using on my N97. Take a look at how extensive the report is. Best thing about this, the info displayed are LIVE! You can see the numbers changing and graphs animating according to the phone’s background processes.

Download DeviceInfo from Moubail now!

Moubail.com recently suggested me in a puzzle game produced by them.

It’s called Match’em, a puzzle game for S60v5 devices. It’s based on a classic tile game called “SameGame”.

Basically the gameplay is still the same, touch groups of symbols to eliminate them, but they have made it more compatible with touchscreen.

The symbols are big enough for finger tapping, so you don’t need a stylus.

As you can see, they are using symbols from card decks instead of tiles. The goal is to remove as many symbols as possible and in as large groups as possible to maximize the score. The game will save the last and the highest score.

Download this widget for FREE now on Moubail.

Hour Power, the app that tells time is now compatible with the s60v5 devices.

It’s a simple app that utilises the built in text-to-speech engine to tell time.

When you open the app for the first time, you will get to choose the time mode, 12h or 24h clock.

How does it work? Just press on the app shortcut to hear the time. Exactly what you need when waking up and unable to focus on an alarm clock display. English, German, French, Italian and Portuguese language are currently supported. It’s recommended to place the app shortcut on the homescreen for easy access.

How many of you here hope to have the iPhone interface experience on your Symbian devices? Yes? Yes?

How many of you want the “slide to unlock” feature on your S60 phones(especially touchscreen devices like 5800, N97 n OmniaHD)?

Well, now you can, with MyPhone.

Check out my iPho… I mean.. my Nokia N97.

MyPhone only works on S60 OS and it turns your Series 60 phones interface into an ‘i’Phone UI. You can have a smart phone enhanced with TWO user interfaces! Once installed, the first thing you see is the slide to unlock screen. Trust me.. the sliding does work… haha..

The menu will present you with iPhone like icons that gives you access to various features on your phone. You can actually customize it to show 3(or 4) icons in each row in the menu.

They guys at MMMOOO have also added some customized interface and apps in the software like the call screen, RSS reader and the sketch pad.

After using it for a few days, I think MyPhone works very well and also very stable. The sliding menu animation is very smooth… (although there might not be any flicking interface yet).. and I like the fact that we can have the 4th screen all for ourselves… which mean we can fully customize each and every icons on that screen to link to any apps we want.

Check out the video below.

Interested? SymbianpOp will be giving out 5 MyPhone licenses on 26 June 2009 for 5 lucky readers… remember to check out SymbianpOp to get yourself a full version of the MyPhone app!)

The one app that S60v5 users have been waiting for is now available for free download on OVI Store! The facebook app is a native s60 app that can be installed on 5800 and N97 as it is optimized for touchscreens.

This facebook app has big buttons and very clean layout, very much like the website. I am sure we do not need stylus for this interface. heh.

Here are some screen shots taken of the app on my 5800 XPM.

As you can see, that’s the login screen and once connected, it will bring up the news feed screen. Notifications like messages, pokes and friend requests are on top and at the bottom of the screen are buttons to your own profile, friends list, photos and inbox. Clicking on the green “+” sign will allow you to leave comments on the items selected.

Photos can be viewed in landscape or portrait mode. We can move around the gallery by clicking on the arrows and the Tags button will toggle the name tags on the photos on/off.

Screen on the left is how my own profile looks like and the one on the right shows the comment screen when you comment on a photo.

Wanna get Facebook on your 5800.. or *cough*…N97? Check out OVI Store now!

Hello boys and girls.. today let us have a look at the top 10 apps that are frequently used on my Nokia 5800XPM.

No.10: PhoneTorch

Turns your 5800 into a torchlight! It utilises the LED light at the back of the camera and you can choose to produce morse codes or simple to change light colour.

No.9: Qik

Qik lets you stream live from your phone camera to the web so people from elsewhere can watch and they are also able to chat with you… conversations will appear on your phone screen and you simply reply them by talking.

No.8: Slick

Slick is an all in one messenger app that lets you chat with your friends via MSN, Yahoo, Gtalk etc. I like how the interface blurs out when there’s a popup. You can also hide the app and a tiny marquee will appear when you receive new messages.

No.7: WeatherBug

A widget that displays weather for current day and 7 days ahead… it uses your GPS location so the information is more precise. I like the animation screen of the wind change on the earth.

No.6: Photo Browser

A beta app released by Nokia Betalabs… it lets you view photos in stunning 3D scrolling effect.. similar to Piclens/Cooliris add on on Firefox. I like the face zooming feature where it zooms to each face on the photo when you swipe the photo.

No.5: Talkanaut

Another multi IM messenger.. but this one is very stable and I like how it loads avatars and the clean tabbed interface.

No.4: Google Maps

Google Maps as we know it… loads maps and let us route to places we want to go…. now with Latitude feature built in, we can instantly see where all our friends are. Nice… but it needs data connection in order to load maps and latitude lists.

No.3: Snaptu

Snaptu is an app that integrates many Internet services and social networks in one so that we can have access to all of them in just an app. Facebook, Twitter, Picasa, BBC news, Google iCal are just some of the services in Snaptu. Really love using it to check RSS feeds.

No.2: Garmin

Best mapping app in the world!!!!!! Voice guidance, turn by turn routing… uses maps that has landmarks updated by users itself… the power of the Garmin community is superb. Not free though… but erm.. heh :)

No.1: Gravity

The one app that I use everyday every minute everywhere… Gravity.. the native S60 app for Twitter. Love the kinetic scrolling, able to save a lot of twitter searches, built in photo uploading feature direct to mobypicture, twitpic, posterous etc… frequent updates… fantastic interface…. hmm so yea.. I LOVE this app. haha

That’s all.. my top 10 favourite 5800 apps. Any comments or questions, do leave them here. :D

Remember the Flicker Clock for 5800 from some time ago? Pixelsbeatpaper has again produced some great stuff for the S60v5 platform.

First up! The Mac Attack game.

It’s a very simple game. All you need to do it poke the screen when an Apple logo flies by… it’s similar to those shooting games that we played long time ago.. so it’s very simple and does not need instructions to play.

Next up… Tic Tac Toe 2 players!

I think this game does no need anymore introduction. Haha…

There’s another game on their site called ShuffleShock.

Go visit PixelsBeatPaper website and download these games now!

I’ve been using this theme for a while now and I’m still lovin it. I like bright themes, clean background. I like it more when it has Fring elements in it.

If you like Fring and if you are using Nokia 5800, you should be using Fring theme too. lol

New to Symbian and not familiar on how to install themes on your phone? Follow these steps:

- Download the sis file to your PC.
- Transfer the file to your phone via bluetooth or PC Suite.
- If you used bluetooth, the file should land in your SMS inbox. Open the file and it will install automatically.
- Once installed, you can locate the theme by going to > Settings > Personal > Themes > General.

Download Fring Theme here.

Remember we posted about the Rotary Dialer app for 5800 some time ago? The developer of the app, Jamie Fuller has developed an experimental multitouch game for s60 touchscreen devices and it’s called Space Dancer.

He got the idea from games like “Guitar Hero” and “Dance Dance Revolution” whereby users press a button or buttons along with the music.

The game is complete now although it might still be at alpha stage. I have recorded a video of the game. Check it out.

Hi all, finally a native Twitter client is released for S60 phones like N96, N85, N79, 5800 etc.

Have you checked out the Download! folder in your 5800 recently? I spotted 2 new things when I went in last night.

-Bubble Popper Game, and
-WeatherBug widget.

The game is not free, so let’s talk about the widget, which is free for download. ahahah

First thing i like about this widget is that it allows you to switch on GPS so that the widget can fetch the weather for the location you are at. It shows the wind direction along with the speed too.

The 3 buttons at the bottom of the screen is very big. Nice to press using our fingers. It’s a toggle to switch among 3 views, main screen, weekly weather table and the radar animation screen. (It really animates!)

Have a look at these 2 screenshots above. It’s the weekly table and the radar animation.

One more thing though, this widget needs to connect to the Internet in order to work So better get yourself in a wifi hotspot or a data plan yo!

To get WeatherBug, goto Menu > Download! > Apps > Widgets.

Have you struggled looking for a candle or torchlight when the electricity got cut off suddenly? Fret no more! Here comes PhoneTorch! An app that turns the 5800 camera LED into a torchlight (and more)!

The new version of PhoneTorch app now has Morse code and the option to switch the light colour! (basicaly its just between the LED and the red focusing light)

I’d say the light is bright enough for close distance. Check out this photo below.

Use at your own risk though cos long usage of the LED might just break it. haha but worth a try nonetheless.
