OK So I got the E5 for review recently and the first thing I did was to transfer all my phonebook contacts to it from my previous phone which was the Nokia X6.

Fortunately for Symbian users, there’s a feature called ‘Switch’ which comes along with all Symbian devices for users to transfer data from one phone to another like contacts, calendar and SMS/MMS messages.

The process is simple.

Locate the Switch feature in your phone.

Tap on the “Start Sending” icon, select which phone to send to and your are done!

For clearer instructions, here’s a Live demo I recorded using the Nokia N900. Check it out.

NOTE: This feature is available to all current Symbian devices. Look it out in your phones now! :D

Nokia has recently launched a new Eseries to replace the E63 that caters to the mass market.

Overview of Nokia E5: Connect seamlessly to the people in your professional and personal lives through instant messaging, email and your favourite online social networks.

I just got it yesterday and before I start using/reviewing it, here are some photos and video of the unboxing.

I realised that the packaging is quite compact and is made of recyclable material. Eco friendly. Nice.

The package comes with manuals, earphones, battery, USB adapter/charger, OVI booklet and the Nokia E5 itself… pretty standard.

The E5 has 5 colour variations; Carbon Black, Chalk White, Copper Brown, Silver Grey, Sky Blue.. this one I have here is the Chalk White version.

It has a 5 megapixel camera with zoom up to 3x (digital) & an LED flash. One of the drawbacks is that there is no autofocus.

Thickness compared to an X6. The E5 screen is 2.36″ with a resolution of 320 x 240 pixels (QVGA) & supports up to 256,000 colours.

Some notable features of the E5:
- Get work emails in real time through Mail for Exchange and IBM® Lotus Notes® Traveler.
- Keep chatting while on the go. All your favorite IM communities—Windows Live Messenger,™ Yahoo!® Messenger, Google Talk™ and Ovi Chat
- Stay close to your friends on Facebook – view their status and send a message directly from your contact list.
- View and edit Microsoft Word, Excel and PowerPoint documents using the Quickoffice application.

———————

OK More features and reviews will be up soon.
The Nokia E5 is now available at all stores for only RM830. Very very affordable for a device with such features.

Remember my post about Whatsapp Messenger a while ago?

Whatsapp Messenger which is very famous among iPhone and Blackberry users, has now expanded their service to the Symbian platform! It works like BBM on Blackberrys whereby users can chat among each other (now with people on other platforms) for free! Messages are sent using wifi/3G.

It’s an ALWAYS ON application like SMS. You don’t need to sign in to anything at all. Messages just comes like how you receive SMS.

The download link for Symbian devices is up on their site. Click to http://www.whatsapp.com/download/ and click on Nokia.

Here’s how the interface looks like.

For your information, currently Symbian users can only send text to friends. Transfer of images, audio and location is only available for iPhone and Blackberry (transfer images only).

Once installed, the app will look for other Whatsapp users from your phonebook and display them in the “favourites” list in your Whatsapp. You can then chat with them.

Tips:
- If you want to chat with your friend, make sure you have their phone numbers saved in your phonebook or else they will not appear in your favourite list.
- The app does not quit/close. It stays ON forever. This means it will keep consuming data (wifi/3G) so make sure you have unlimited data package or it will cost you a bomb.

Go download WHATSAPP for Symbian now! Remember to tell your Nokia, iPhone and Blackberry friends about this app so we don’t need to SMS one another anymore!

Nokia Conversation has posted some initial camera samples from the Nokia N8. The photos were taken by a variety of folks involved in the camera’s development. They also claim that the photos were untouched, straight from the camera.

Check out the photos below to see what the 12megapixel Carl Zeiss optics on the Nokia N8 can do.

According to them, more low light photos will be posted soon.
What do you think of the photos taken using the Nokia N8? I think they are superb. Sharp images, vibrant colour, low noise.

Negri Electronics has recently posted a video of them handling a prototype from Nokia that looks very much like the upcoming Nokia N8 but with full QWERTY keyboard. Since Nokia has announced that the N8 will be the last Nseries to be powered by Symbian, could this just be the E7… or C7? Soon we will find out.

For now, check out this video that shows off the multiple ports available on the device (including a HDMI port), the keyboard, homescreen widget, browser and the slider screen mechanism.

From what we can see, the screen seems to be a 4incher.. and has probably a 640×480px resolution screen. I like how thin it is for a device with slide out QWERTY and the look of the keyboard is very nice too. Did you notice the 8mpx camera in the video? Hope it shoots 720p HD and that would be sweet.

Nokia just announced the new X5 at the current Nokia Connections event at Singapore and woah.. I did not expect it to look like this.

It’s a squarish smartphone with slide-out QWERTY keyboard. It is running S60v3 Feature Pack 2, and has “Comes with Music” service. The X5 has a 5megapixels camera too. Price is about 185 Euro before tax.

This is how the slide out keyboard looks like. I personally don’t like the appearance of the phone. Somehow it reminds of the Microsoft Kin 1.

Check out this video I found on youtube.

What do you think of the X5?
Do you like how it looks?
Are you looking forward to own one?

Do leave a comment and let us know.

Woohoo! This is probably one of the reasons why one should get a Nokia N8.

Do you know that, with the USB On-The-Go feature on the N8, we can plug in almost any thumbdrive/mobile phones to the N8 and get detected as a mass storage drive?
With this feature, you can store alllllll your MP3s in the thumbdrive and plug it to your N8 when you want to listen to music.(or photos.. or videos.. or basically any files that can be opened using the N8)

All you need is a micro USB to USB adapter cord.. which is already provided along with many recent Nokia phones.

Check out this video below for step by step guide.

What do you think of this USB OTG feature?

Symbian users! Ever wished you can send text messages to your friends for free? Wouldn’t it be great if you can chat with your friends on iPhone and Blackberry for free? Soon you can!

Whatsapp Messenger which is very famous among iPhone and Blackberry users now, will be expanding their service to Symbian platform soon!

According to them, “WhatsApp Messenger is a smartphone messaging app which allows you to exchange messages with your friends and contacts without having to pay for SMS. WhatsApp Messenger is cross platform and is currently available for iPhone and BlackBerry and yes, iPhones and BlackBerries can message each other too! To send and receive messages, WhatsApp utilizes your existing smartphone internet data plan: 3G/EDGE (or Wi-Fi when available)”

Got the hang of it yet? I am one of the beta testers of the app for Symbian and I can say that it’s working very well even at beta stage. Check out some screenshots I took on my Nokia X6.

The app has to be connected to the Internet in order to work. Users can choose to connect to Wifi or 3G. Upon launching Whatsapp for the first time, we need to register our phone number so that your friends can see you in their Whatsapp contact list automatically.

The main menu of the app has 4 sections;

- Chats [all your chat sessions with your friends]
- Favourties [your chatable contacts... Wthe app automatically searches your phonebook for Whatsapp users]
- Contacts [your full phonebook contacts]
- Status [you can change your status to let your friends know if you are free to talk or not]

[LEFT] Status screen, you can select one of the preset statuses or set your own.
[RIGHT] List of conversations with your friends.

FYI, Whatsapp is “always-on”. That means there is no way to quit the app. It is always on cos it tries to mimic SMS… which is always available. You do not need to login to chat. Everytime you get a message, you will see a popup on the screen.

Whatsapp will soon be available in the OVI Store. Wait for it cos it is the most awesome thing to happen on mobile phones.

Nokia just announced a new device powered by the new Symbian^3 platform, the Nokia N8. It is launched with a new breed of camera to compete with the current point and shoot digicams in the market.

From the specs, I’d say that this Nokia N8 is the best Nokia camera device ever as it comes with a 12-megapixel camera with Carl Zeiss optics and Xenon flash. The camera sensor is larger than most of the sensors in current camera phones and also digicams out there, so expect photos with good noise control from this new N8.

The N8 can also capture HD videos at 720p and has the ability to edit them within the device itself. Watching videos is also great on the 3.5″ HD capacitive touchscreen. This is the first Nokia device to have HDMI output to you can plug it to your HDTVs to share photos and videos with your friends. Other than that, the experience of watching videos on the N8 is also different as it has Dolby Digital Plus surround sound and is ablt to hook into a dedicated Web TV application for access to news and entertainment on the move.

The N8 also has messaging and social networks features. Access live feeds from your Twitter and Facebook accounts from the homscreen itself. You will be able to comment, reach and post photos and statuses with one touch. As usual, the N8 comes with free global Ovi Maps walk and drive navigation with support in more than 70 countries worldwide.

The Symbian^3 powering the N8, is a new and enhanced version of the current Symbian OS and it now supports gestures and multitouch like pinch to zoom. Other enhancements are; 3 customizable homescreens, improved 2D and 3D graphics for faster and more responsive UI.

The N8 comes with 5 eye catching colours and will cost about €370 before tax and subsidies. The Nokia N8 is expected to ship in the 3rd quarter of 2010.

Stay tuned for more into on Nokia N8!
