OK So I got the E5 for review recently and the first thing I did was to transfer all my phonebook contacts to it from my previous phone which was the Nokia X6.

Fortunately for Symbian users, there’s a feature called ‘Switch’ which comes along with all Symbian devices for users to transfer data from one phone to another like contacts, calendar and SMS/MMS messages.

The process is simple.

Locate the Switch feature in your phone.

Tap on the “Start Sending” icon, select which phone to send to and your are done!

For clearer instructions, here’s a Live demo I recorded using the Nokia N900. Check it out.

NOTE: This feature is available to all current Symbian devices. Look it out in your phones now!

Nokia has recently launched a new Eseries to replace the E63 that caters to the mass market.

Overview of Nokia E5: Connect seamlessly to the people in your professional and personal lives through instant messaging, email and your favourite online social networks.

I just got it yesterday and before I start using/reviewing it, here are some photos and video of the unboxing.

I realised that the packaging is quite compact and is made of recyclable material. Eco friendly. Nice.

The package comes with manuals, earphones, battery, USB adapter/charger, OVI booklet and the Nokia E5 itself… pretty standard.

The E5 has 5 colour variations; Carbon Black, Chalk White, Copper Brown, Silver Grey, Sky Blue.. this one I have here is the Chalk White version.

It has a 5 megapixel camera with zoom up to 3x (digital) & an LED flash. One of the drawbacks is that there is no autofocus.

Thickness compared to an X6. The E5 screen is 2.36″ with a resolution of 320 x 240 pixels (QVGA) & supports up to 256,000 colours.

Some notable features of the E5:
- Get work emails in real time through Mail for Exchange and IBM® Lotus Notes® Traveler.
- Keep chatting while on the go. All your favorite IM communities—Windows Live Messenger,™ Yahoo!® Messenger, Google Talk™ and Ovi Chat
- Stay close to your friends on Facebook – view their status and send a message directly from your contact list.
- View and edit Microsoft Word, Excel and PowerPoint documents using the Quickoffice application.

———————

OK More features and reviews will be up soon.
The Nokia E5 is now available at all stores for only RM830. Very very affordable for a device with such features.

Remember my post about Whatsapp Messenger a while ago?

Whatsapp Messenger which is very famous among iPhone and Blackberry users, has now expanded their service to the Symbian platform! It works like BBM on Blackberrys whereby users can chat among each other (now with people on other platforms) for free! Messages are sent using wifi/3G.

It’s an ALWAYS ON application like SMS. You don’t need to sign in to anything at all. Messages just comes like how you receive SMS.

The download link for Symbian devices is up on their site. Click to http://www.whatsapp.com/download/ and click on Nokia.

Here’s how the interface looks like.

For your information, currently Symbian users can only send text to friends. Transfer of images, audio and location is only available for iPhone and Blackberry (transfer images only).

Once installed, the app will look for other Whatsapp users from your phonebook and display them in the “favourites” list in your Whatsapp. You can then chat with them.

Tips:
- If you want to chat with your friend, make sure you have their phone numbers saved in your phonebook or else they will not appear in your favourite list.
- The app does not quit/close. It stays ON forever. This means it will keep consuming data (wifi/3G) so make sure you have unlimited data package or it will cost you a bomb.

Go download WHATSAPP for Symbian now! Remember to tell your Nokia, iPhone and Blackberry friends about this app so we don’t need to SMS one another anymore!

What do you think of the photos taken using the Nokia N8? I think they are superb. Sharp images, vibrant colour, low noise.

Negri Electronics has recently posted a video of them handling a prototype from Nokia that looks very much like the upcoming Nokia N8 but with full QWERTY keyboard. Since Nokia has announced that the N8 will be the last Nseries to be powered by Symbian, could this just be the E7… or C7? Soon we will find out.

For now, check out this video that shows off the multiple ports available on the device (including a HDMI port), the keyboard, homescreen widget, browser and the slider screen mechanism.

From what we can see, the screen seems to be a 4incher.. and has probably a 640×480px resolution screen. I like how thin it is for a device with slide out QWERTY and the look of the keyboard is very nice too. Did you notice the 8mpx camera in the video? Hope it shoots 720p HD and that would be sweet.
