SymbianpOp Sharing fun stuff about Symbian
Categories: Tips & Tricks, Videos

OK So I got the E5 for review recently and the first thing I did was to transfer all my phonebook contacts to it from my previous phone which was the Nokia X6.

Fortunately for Symbian users, there’s a feature called ‘Switch’ which comes along with all Symbian devices for users to transfer data from one phone to another like contacts, calendar and SMS/MMS messages.

The process is simple.

Locate the Switch feature in your phone.

Tap on the “Start Sending” icon, select which phone to send to and your are done!

For clearer instructions, here’s a Live demo I recorded using the Nokia N900. Check it out.

NOTE: This feature is available to all current Symbian devices. Look it out in your phones now! :D

Nokia has recently launched a new Eseries to replace the E63 that caters to the mass market.

Overview of Nokia E5: Connect seamlessly to the people in your professional and personal lives through instant messaging, email and your favourite online social networks.

I just got it yesterday and before I start using/reviewing it, here are some photos and video of the unboxing.

I realised that the packaging is quite compact and is made of recyclable material. Eco friendly. Nice.

The package comes with manuals, earphones, battery, USB adapter/charger, OVI booklet and the Nokia E5 itself… pretty standard.

The E5 has 5 colour variations; Carbon Black, Chalk White, Copper Brown, Silver Grey, Sky Blue.. this one I have here is the Chalk White version.

It has a 5 megapixel camera with zoom up to 3x (digital) & an LED flash. One of the drawbacks is that there is no autofocus.

Thickness compared to an X6. The E5 screen is 2.36″ with a resolution of 320 x 240 pixels (QVGA) & supports up to 256,000 colours.

Some notable features of the E5:
- Get work emails in real time through Mail for Exchange and IBM® Lotus Notes® Traveler.
- Keep chatting while on the go. All your favorite IM communities—Windows Live Messenger,™ Yahoo!® Messenger, Google Talk™ and Ovi Chat
- Stay close to your friends on Facebook – view their status and send a message directly from your contact list.
- View and edit Microsoft Word, Excel and PowerPoint documents using the Quickoffice application.

———————

OK More features and reviews will be up soon.
The Nokia E5 is now available at all stores for only RM830. Very very affordable for a device with such features.

Negri Electronics has recently posted a video of them handling a prototype from Nokia that looks very much like the upcoming Nokia N8 but with full QWERTY keyboard. Since Nokia has announced that the N8 will be the last Nseries to be powered by Symbian, could this just be the E7… or C7? Soon we will find out.

For now, check out this video that shows off the multiple ports available on the device (including a HDMI port), the keyboard, homescreen widget, browser and the slider screen mechanism.

From what we can see, the screen seems to be a 4incher.. and has probably a 640×480px resolution screen. I like how thin it is for a device with slide out QWERTY and the look of the keyboard is very nice too. Did you notice the 8mpx camera in the video? Hope it shoots 720p HD and that would be sweet.

Nokia just announced the new X5 at the current Nokia Connections event at Singapore and woah.. I did not expect it to look like this.

It’s a squarish smartphone with slide-out QWERTY keyboard. It is running S60v3 Feature Pack 2, and has “Comes with Music” service. The X5 has a 5megapixels camera too. Price is about 185 Euro before tax.

This is how the slide out keyboard looks like. I personally don’t like the appearance of the phone. Somehow it reminds of the Microsoft Kin 1.

Check out this video I found on youtube.

What do you think of the X5?
Do you like how it looks?
Are you looking forward to own one?

Woohoo! This is probably one of the reasons why one should get a Nokia N8.

Do you know that, with the USB On-The-Go feature on the N8, we can plug in almost any thumbdrive/mobile phones to the N8 and get detected as a mass storage drive?
With this feature, you can store alllllll your MP3s in the thumbdrive and plug it to your N8 when you want to listen to music.(or photos.. or videos.. or basically any files that can be opened using the N8)

All you need is a micro USB to USB adapter cord.. which is already provided along with many recent Nokia phones.

Check out this video below for step by step guide.

What do you think of this USB OTG feature?

Photos below were taken using the Nokia N8 that isn’t running the latest software. Notice that even though the OS is not the final version, the outcome of the camera was very impressive. Super sharp photos and very vibrant colours.

Checkout these 3 photos. Taken at full 12-megapixel resolution. (Click to enlarge)

Here’s a sample HD video recorded using the N8 at 720p without editing. Superb results.

Today Nokia unveiled 3 new devices for those who are into messaging, emails and social networks.

NOKIA C6

The first one, Nokia C6 spots a 3.2inches HD touchscreen, slide-out four row keyboard (N97 had only 3 rows) and a 5 megapixels camera.

The C6 comes with all the features that can satisfy your messaging needs. With customizable homescreen, you will be able to get access to your favourite contacts, emails and Facebook updates at a glance. The Nokia Messaging app that comes prebuilt with the C6, can support up to 10 email accounts. (eg: YahooMail, GMail, Windows Live and Ovi Mail).

Some other stuff worth mentioning are; FREE Ovi maps walk and drive navigations, support up to 16GB with microSD, It’s expected to be out in the 2nd quarter of 2010 and is estimated to cost about €220 before taxes and subsidies.

Video of the Nokia C6 in action.

NOKIA C3

The C3 is a Series 40 device with full qwerty keyboard. It comes pre-built Nokia Messaging (for all your email needs) and Nokia Chat (the app that connects you to all your IMs like MSN, Gtalk, Ovi Chat, etc). The Nokia C3 also has the conversational SMS chat feature, so you can keep on top of your text dialogue and find your favourite contacts homescreen, where you’ll also see news and alerts.

The C3 has WIFI, 2mpx camera, 2.4inch screen and support up to 8GB of storage. It will be out in the 2nd quarter of 2010, has options for a few colours: golden white, slate grey and hot pink and is expected to cost about €90 before taxes and subsidies.

NOKIA E5

I like this one. A new addition to the E series, combining all the good stuff from E71 and E72. The E5 is made for people who doesnt like charging their phones. Why? Cos the E5 comes with 18 hours and 30 minutes talk time (in GSM mode) and 29 days standby time. With the latest S60 v3 software, you can access your social network and contacts right from the homescreen.

Facebook updates are merged into your phonebook contact list so you can see what is everyone doing at that time. The E5 also comes with full messaging and chat features like the other messaging devices above.

Apart from the 10 email account support, the E5 also caters for the business users whereby it also capable of handling Microsoft Exchange and IBM Lotus Notes Traveler.

The Nokia E5 comes in five mouth-watering colours – Carbon Black, Chalk White, Sky Blue, Copper Brown and Silver Gray. Estimated to cost €180 before taxes and subsidies and is expected to be available in the third quarter of 2010.

Thought of saving the environment lately?

Did you know that you may have been doing it already?

Nokia has come up with a going green campaign recently and they have produced 2 promo videos to show us how we can save the environment by just using our do-it-all Nokia devices.

Check out the videos.

It’s true that we consume less energy and power if we use our mobile phones to update Facebook status instead of the computer as it uses much more power and emits CO2.

If only 10 per cent of those over one billion Nokia mobile users switched to using their phones to do-it-all, 25million tons of CO2 emissions would be cut during a year.

So the most talked about game recently has just been made available on the Ovi Store and most of us were actually quite excited about this game. Here’s a brief intro on the game and some of my opinions.

It’s basically a top down style racing game with a twist. It lets you to race on a track selected by you, either using the predefined ones or your own location by utilsing the GPS to find out where you are and the roads around you.

Once you are in, you will have to select online mode or offline. Pick the first one if you want to use your current location as a racing track.

In offline mode, you can select a country of your choice, select the starting point from the “animated” map and then start off the race.

When I first saw this I was not amazed, as I was expecting to see the real Nokia Ovi maps (thinking that it should be integrated with each other) but all we get is just a simply block and path kinda maps with dots.

The gameplay is very simple. No acceleration. No braking. All you can do is just steer left or right by tapping the icons on both sides of the screen. I like how the little car drifts though haha but expect a lot of oversteer and slides…. and do you notice how pixelated the graphic is? I dont understand why is the game so “basic” but anyways its a free game so we cannot complain much.

Check out the video I recorded below.

Nokia Conversations has recently posted a new video promoting the OVI Store and showcasing a few key apps like Facebook, Qik and Gravity.

The video was directed by Hiro Murai, a music video director who has worked with The Fray and Bloc Party and produced by Partizan, Michel Gondry’s award winning production company. The style of the video is imaginative and fun, as they try to stay away from the typical tech promo videos.

According to Nokia Senior Marketing Manager, John Bartleson: “We want to get people excited about all the amazing things they can do with their Nokia by using the great content available through Ovi Store.”

Thanks Nokia Malaysia for letting us be a bunch of the ealiest people in the country to own the Nokia X6.

It was at the recent Comes With Music bloggers session that we got introduced to the upcoming service and got our hands on the X6 each.

At the event, Nokia actually presented to us their music devices roadmap and how it all led to the born of the latest in the line, the Nokia X6.

Some of the more notable features/specs of the device:
# Capacitive touch screen
# Size: 3.2?
# Resolution: 640 x 360 pixels (nHD)
# 3.5 mm Nokia AV connector for audio and TV-out
# Small DC jack
# 32 GB internal memory
# 3.5g, WIFI

This is how the packaging looks like. Typical Nokia design. Easily recognised.

The device comes along with the superb Nokia WH500 foldable stereo headphones.

So how much better is it compared to its sibling, the Nokia 5800? Well its very solid and doesnt produce any creaks when squeezed. The capacitive touch screen gives an impression that the OS is not sluggish (although its still kinda slow in transitions for some screens.. which is still acceptable).

The speaker is super loud, on par with the Nokia 5800 and the N96. Located at the right side of the phone, Nokia hopes that it will let us experience stereo sounds when we watch videos holding the phone horizontally. One thing lacking is the stand. Coming from a Nokia 5800 and N97 user, I’m used to placing the phone on the table with a stand or a slide out keyboard for watching videos but not possible for the X6.

The camera is good! Comparable with the N97 and the N85. The X6 is very good at taking macro/close up shots.

More detailed review will be done soon, so for now, check out this video I recorded of the Nokia X6.

Price of the Nokia X6 is still unknown as it is not launched in the market yet. Will update you guys once I get the news.

Ever wondered why Nokia came out with the mini version of the N97 when it does not bring any new features other than ‘being mini-er’ ?

Well, wonder no more!

Here are 2 videos of so called ‘experiments’ telling you why Mini is better. The Nokia Human Research department carried out a series of experiments designed to gauge public reaction to the N97 mini and all things slightly smaller.

Check out the expressions of the people in the video.

What do you think? Enough reason to actually have a mini version of N97?

Nokia Conversations has recently posted a video hands on with the Nokia N900 Maemo device showing off the browser performance and some tips and tricks of the user interface.

I’d say it’s quite impressive since the Mozilla browser on the device supports Flash and is very user friendly.

In the video you can see them playing FarmVille on Facebook using the N900 browser.

Viewing history pages can be activated with a swipe from outside the screen. Another wow.

Check out the video to experience it yourself.

Now do you want a Nokia N900 already? :D

As mentioned in my previous post, the Nokia X6 was featured at the recent Nokia OneConnectedWorld conference and I got the chance to play around with the device trying out it’s new display, camera and other features.

Click here to view some sample shots from the X6.

First of all, the X6 is the first Nokia that comes with a capacitive touchscreen. The dimension of 3.2″ with 640×360 resolution display is big enough for most of the video and photo viewing tasks. The responsiveness of the capacitive screen was definitely a lot better than the 5800 and also the N97. A slightest touch on the screen is sufficient to trigger actions on the interface.

Speaking on interface, the X6 comes with a new homescreen that allows a carousel view of favourite contacts and there’s also a shortcuts bar at the bottom of the screen. I think this is more usable than the one on the 5800 XPM.

Since the X6 is the highest end device in the music line, the audio playback should be of a certain standard in speaker quality and also the music player interface.

Well, I can say that the speaker plays audio very well. Loud and clear (thanks to the dedicated audio chip for crystal clear hi-fi sound quality. Still, it lacks bass but I’m sure its a totally different story if music is played throught the earphone). The player interface on the other hand is quite a dissapointment as it looks and works the same as the 5800 XPM. The X6 supports mp3, SPMidi, AAC, AAC+, eAAC+ and WMA.

The X6 comes with a Carl Zeiss 5 megapixel AF camera (2592 x 1944 pixels), 4x zoom and dual LED flash. From some shots I took. I realised that the X6 can take photos really well. The desaturated-when-indoor problem almost didnt exist on this one so it’s a good thing. It also records video at 640×480 resolution at 30fps.

Check out these videos of I took of the Nokia X6.

This is part 2 of our 3-megapixel battle between the Nokia 5800 and iPhone 3Gs.

In this simple battle, we will see the pros and cons of both video camera in a few aspects:
- Recording at infinity distance and zooming
- Focusing and macro recording.

First up, let’s see how both devices fair in recording and zooming.

iPhone 3Gs

Nokia 5800

Verdict: The Nokia 5800 XPM produces clearer and smoother video and has the zooming capability with louder audio reception. iPhone 3Gs on the other hand, cannot zoom and has a less sensitive mic.

Second test: Focusing and macro capabilities.

iPhone 3Gs

Nokia 5800

Verdict: iPhone here has the upper hand as it allows pre-focusing (which is very good for recording at very very short distances) while the Nokia 5800 does not have focus at all (resulting in blur objects and close distances).

What do you think of both cameras? Leave a comment and let us know.
