According to Foursquare VP of Mobile & Partnerships, Holger Luedorf, they will be focusing more on tie-ins with mobile manufacturers’ app stores and negotiate ‘featured’ status in app stores to help expose a wider audiece to Foursquare in the future.

Remember my post about Whatsapp Messenger a while ago?

Whatsapp Messenger which is very famous among iPhone and Blackberry users, has now expanded their service to the Symbian platform! It works like BBM on Blackberrys whereby users can chat among each other (now with people on other platforms) for free! Messages are sent using wifi/3G.

It’s an ALWAYS ON application like SMS. You don’t need to sign in to anything at all. Messages just comes like how you receive SMS.

The download link for Symbian devices is up on their site. Click to and click on Nokia.

Here’s how the interface looks like.

For your information, currently Symbian users can only send text to friends. Transfer of images, audio and location is only available for iPhone and Blackberry (transfer images only).

Once installed, the app will look for other Whatsapp users from your phonebook and display them in the “favourites” list in your Whatsapp. You can then chat with them.

- If you want to chat with your friend, make sure you have their phone numbers saved in your phonebook or else they will not appear in your favourite list.
- The app does not quit/close. It stays ON forever. This means it will keep consuming data (wifi/3G) so make sure you have unlimited data package or it will cost you a bomb.

Go download WHATSAPP for Symbian now! Remember to tell your Nokia, iPhone and Blackberry friends about this app so we don’t need to SMS one another anymore!

Symbian users! Ever wished you can send text messages to your friends for free? Wouldn’t it be great if you can chat with your friends on iPhone and Blackberry for free? Soon you can!

Whatsapp Messenger which is very famous among iPhone and Blackberry users now, will be expanding their service to Symbian platform soon!

According to them, “WhatsApp Messenger is a smartphone messaging app which allows you to exchange messages with your friends and contacts without having to pay for SMS. WhatsApp Messenger is cross platform and is currently available for iPhone and BlackBerry and yes, iPhones and BlackBerries can message each other too! To send and receive messages, WhatsApp utilizes your existing smartphone internet data plan: 3G/EDGE (or Wi-Fi when available)”

Got the hang of it yet? I am one of the beta testers of the app for Symbian and I can say that it’s working very well even at beta stage. Check out some screenshots I took on my Nokia X6.

The app has to be connected to the Internet in order to work. Users can choose to connect to Wifi or 3G. Upon launching Whatsapp for the first time, we need to register our phone number so that your friends can see you in their Whatsapp contact list automatically.

The main menu of the app has 4 sections;

- Chats [all your chat sessions with your friends]
- Favourties [your chatable contacts... Wthe app automatically searches your phonebook for Whatsapp users]
- Contacts [your full phonebook contacts]
- Status [you can change your status to let your friends know if you are free to talk or not]

[LEFT] Status screen, you can select one of the preset statuses or set your own.
[RIGHT] List of conversations with your friends.

FYI, Whatsapp is “always-on”. That means there is no way to quit the app. It is always on cos it tries to mimic SMS… which is always available. You do not need to login to chat. Everytime you get a message, you will see a popup on the screen.

Whatsapp will soon be available in the OVI Store. Wait for it cos it is the most awesome thing to happen on mobile phones.

Categories: Apps has published an app on the Ovistore which you can download for free.

What’s this 10×10 app? What does it do? If you have seen their site then I’m sure you will understand.

It’s an app that displays 100 images of the current top news and displayed 1 word along with each photo that relates to the news.

The moment you load the app, it will display about 20 images each representing a news. Tap on each photo brings up the word.

You can also select which day to view. Now, Today, Yesterday, or select a date.
Unlike the website, this app doesnt link you to the news source.

Try the app out. It’s Free from the Ovi Store. Here’s a video demo of the app.

Skype and Nokia today jointly announced the release of Skype for Symbian, a Skype client for Nokia smartphones based on the Symbian platform, the world’s most popular smartphone platform. Skype for Symbian will allow Nokia smartphone users worldwide to use Skype on the move, over either a WiFi or mobile data connection (GPRS, EDGE, 3G). It is now downloadable for free from the Ovi Store, Nokia’s one-stop shop for mobile content.

So I have gone to OviStore and downloaded the app. To my surprise, it’s very fast and the interface is very sleek. I expected it to be somewhat sluggish like the previous Java version but was totally overwhelmed.
Upon logging in, your contacts will be displayed with their avatars and statuses.

Skype for Symbian enables Nokia smartphone users to:

· Make free Skype-to-Skype calls to other Skype users anywhere in the world*
· Save money on calls and texts (SMS) to phones abroad.
· Send and receive instant messages to and from individuals or groups
· Share pictures, videos and other files.
· Receive calls to their existing online number
· See when Skype contacts are online and available to call or IM
· Easily import names and numbers from the phone’s address book

Here’s a screenshot of the contact list and by tapping the first button at the bottom of the screen will call the contact straight away. This allows us to do voice calls with Skype users anywhere in the world via their computers or mobile.

Skype for Symbian will run on any Nokia smartphone using Symbian^1, the latest version of the Symbian platform. Skype will soon introduce this client to Symbian mobile devices from other manufacturers, including Sony Ericsson.

The chat window looks clean and easy to the eye. There’s no lag between entering the text and displaying it on the screen, in other words, the interface is very fast.

The initial Skype for Symbian application is compatible with the following Nokia touchscreen models: Nokia N97, Nokia N97 mini, Nokia X6, Nokia 5800 XpressMusic and Nokia 5530 and the following non-touch devices: Nokia E72, Nokia E71, Nokia E90, Nokia E63, Nokia E66, Nokia E51, Nokia N96, Nokia N95, Nokia N95 8Gb, Nokia N85, Nokia N82, Nokia N81, Nokia N81 8 Gb, Nokia N79, Nokia N78, Nokia 6220 classic, Nokia 6210 Navigator, Nokia 5320.

For more information on Skype for Symbian, including the latest supported handset list, at

* Skype recommends use of an unlimited data plan to avoid incurring additional charges from operators. Users should also be aware that extra charges may apply if they use Skype over a mobile data connection when abroad.

One of the growing location based social network service, Foursquare, has been implemented in a Symbian app to allow users to check-in on their locations and share them with friends.

As some of you may know, Foursquare is currently not natively supported on Symbian platform yet, but thanks to Waze, we can now easily report out locations with just a few taps!

All you need to do is download Waze onto your Symbian device (touch/non touch)

Once the GPS signal is locked, click on the “Report” button and scroll down to reveal the Foursquare option.

First time users will be asked to login.

Once logged in, a list of nearby locations will be displayed. Just tap on any of them and you are done!

This is the confirmation screen once u have checked in.

Note: GPS locking is quite slow (was trying this with the Nokia 5800), no options to view badges or friends’ locations… but hey you get to check in without the need to go to on your browser! aha

Point your phone browser to now to download WAZE.

A feature that I think many have been waiting for many years. Finally someone from BetaLabs came up with app that lets us customize the predictive (T9) dictionary in our phones!

With this application, you can:

  • View all the words in your custom dictionary
  • Add new words to it
  • Edit and Delete existing words
  • Export the dictionary as xml file
  • Import words from an xml file
  • Scan text files to import all the words
  • Transfer your dictionary to another phone

Check out the video below to understand the app more.

Nokia Custom Dictionary can be installed on S60 3rd and 5th Edition devices. Its fully functional on Nokia E71, Nokia E63, Nokia 5800 XPressMusic, and Nokia X6.

There might be some minor issues on Nokia N97, Nokia N97 mini, Nokia E72, Nokia E75, Nokia E55, and Nokia E52 and has limited functionality on Nokia N96, Nokia N95, Nokia N95 8GB, Nokia N82, Nokia N79, Nokia N78, and other older phones.

Head on over to Nokia Betalabs now to download the app for your S60 devices!

Bored of the default browser on your S60 touch/non touch devices?

Check out Skyfire! Their latest version, v1.5 was just released recently and it’s free!

Updates for the non touch version (S60 v3):

  • Smooth Scrolling: Scroll operations more fluid.
  • Updated user interface
  • Performance tweaks: More robust and faster browsing experience.

Updates for the touch version (S60 v5):

  • Finger friendly UI: A new finger friendly UI for high resolution touchscreen devices for easier browsing experience.
  • Smooth Scrolling: Kinetic scrolling: Pan or flick the screen to move in any direction smoothly.
  • Full screen mode
  • Auto-Rotate

I was testing it on my Nokia X6 and there are some things that I really like about Skyfire. First of all, it allows us to customize our start screen to fit in feeds from Facebook, Twitter, or any other RSS enabled sites. Check out the screenshots above. (Left) Activating Twitter. (Right) Back to start screen with Twitter feeds enabled.

I like how the bookmarks screen looks. We can categorize our bookmarks into different tabs just like the browsers on our computer.

A reason why you should consider this browser over other 3rd party browsers like Opera is that Skyfire supports Flash! Not only it plays videos on Youtube, I even played flash games on! Amazing… but one ting though… the audio from the Flash files are very jerky.

The kinetic scrolling works very well. I also notice how the browser tries to enlarge the fonts of the websites when in ‘zoom out’ mode (refer to screenshot above).

I think Skyfire has done a great job with v1.5 and some minor fixes need to be done as soon as possible. It’s free anyway so why not download Skyfire by pointing your phone browser to now :D

Ive been playing with the X6 for a while now and it seems like I’ve been showing the Playlist DJ feature on it to everyone I meet.

So what’s this feature about?

It’s actually an app that profiles your music and then sort them out for you in a playlist according to the mood you set. The icon can be found in the Music menu.

Once you are in, 4 mood sliders will be shown and the bottom half of the screen will display list of songs filtered. The 3 buttons at the bottoms are : Play, Search song and Create playlist.

The options allow you to profile your music, sort of like indexing files on your computer, select playlists and remove songs.

Now that we have gone through the features…. do you think it really works in sorting songs to match the mood you set with the slider? Check out the video below.

So do you think you will use this feature? What other things do you think it should have in the future?

Imagine taking photos of a scenery… and the uploading it to the Internet and merge it with photos taken by others which were taken at the same location… creating a 3D imagery of a certain scene. Cool?

Imagine no more cos it’s now a reality.

Nokia betalabs has just launched the beta version of Nokia Image Space that does just as mentioned above. Haha.

You simply link your Flickr account to Image Space. You can then start browsing and sharing photos in Image Space and this way building a view to your part of the world. Your account, the privacy settings and contact lists are handled in Flickr. You see your Flickr contacts and those photos you have access to. Moreover, the comments, tags and photo descriptions can be viewed and edited in Image Space.

When there are enough photos of a given area which have been made publicly available, Image Space generates a 3D presentation from them. This feature will be ramped up in phases during the next two months, so please be patient. You can see some examples now at Helsinki and Tampere.

Currently Nokia Image Space app is compatible with N97 mini, Nokia 6210 Navigator, Nokia 6710 Navigator, Nokia 6720 Classic. Should work in S60 3.2 and 5.0 devices with inbuilt compass.

Check out this video demo of Nokia image Space

Remember the game Mastermind?

They one that you have to break the colour codes set by a codemaker by using colour balls/pins?

Here’s a photo of the classic board game.

(Photo taken from

Well, from the makers of MyPhone, here comes their version of the old classic game called Memo Deduction!

There three level for you to choose, Easy, Normal and Difficult. In Easy mode, there’re four colors and four memos in all. You have 12 chances to guess the right combination. In Normal mode, there’re five colors and five memos in all, and 10 chances. It’s easy for you, right? But in Difficult mode, it’s really hard. You have only 8 chances to figure out 5 memos with 6 colors.

The red pin means there is a memo with the right color and position. The black pin means there is a memo with the right color but wrong position.

I personally think that the ‘notes’ can be made bigger so its more finger friendly. I would also prefer if a menu of all colours pops up everyone i tap on a note so I don’t need to tap it repeatedly to get the colour I want.

OK! Have you got ready to challenge your mind? Memo Deduction is now available to Nokia Phones. It will be available on the OVI Store soon but if you can’t wait, grab a copy for yourself now at the MMMOOO shop for only $1.99 now.

Well, almost all phones.

A small group of developers from the Basque region of Spain has produced a JAVA app for Twitter called J1CK.Tweet. It’s a very simple app, in the sense that the interface is very simple, the menu options are straight forward and it loads super fast. Most importantly, it’s FREE!

Some features of the app:

  • Timeline, @mentions, DMs, favorites, following/followers, follow/unfollow, profiles
  • Quick Reply / Retweet / Favorite
  • Trending Topics / Saved searches support
  • Multiple-account support
  • Twitpic support: you can view photos without the need to open a new browser
  • Camera support! Snap a photo and send to Twitpic all in the app itself
  • Support for touch-screen phones
  • Support for QWERTY keyboard phones

Somehow Im still not able to conduct searches in the app itself. The only option available is “saved searches”.

Keep in mind that this app is supported for most of the Java enabled phones in the market.

J1CK-Tweet: Twitter for Java phones, Beta 1
For all regular keypad or QWERTY phones of all brands (Nokia, Motorola, Sony-Ericsson, LG, Samsung, Huawei)

For touchscreen phones:
Nokia touchscreen phones (eg: Nokia 5800)
Other touchscreen phones (eg: Samsung F480)

To download, point your phone browser to

ALERT ALERT! A damn useful app is emerging and everyone in KL, Malaysia should get it!

It might just be one of the most useful app on your phone alongside Gravity!

Thanks to the guys at Nerdattack, we will be able to check out traffic conditions in the city before we leave the office, go for parties at night or going to work.

If I’m not mistaken, the app is currently only supported on S60 v5 touch devices so if you are using a Nokia 5800, N97, 5530 or N97 mini then probably you should get it when it’s out on the OVI Store.

The widget has a very simple and straight forward interface. Once it’s launched, a list of street names will appear and with just a tap, traffic images will be displayed.

*Live images are grabbed from ITIS btw.

Check out these screenssssssss.. damn nice right? See how the arrows are toggled by just tapping the arrows icon on the top right of the screen.

According to NerdAttack, the app has been submitted to OVI Store and is awaiting approval. Wait for it yo! I’ll try to update u guys once the app is up.

Many of us are using Symbian touch devices like Nokia 5800, Nokia N97 etc. Many of us are also using messengers like MSN, GTalk, Yahoo and Skype.
So how many of you are actually chatting on these messengers using your phones? I know I do.

These are my top 3 favourite chatting/messenger apps for S60v5 devices. We shall analyse them in 3 categories: Interface, Usability/Functionality and Stability.

Showing only 3 apps does not mean I have not tried other apps like Nimbuzz, IM+, Agile Messenger etc.. just that they are not as good as these 3 here

3rd place: FRING

One of the most famous messenger app is Fring. It’s available for multiple platforms like Symbian, iPhone etc. It comes with many features like Facebook and Twitter integration, friends finder, file and photo sending, Fring calls, etc. I used to like it when I was using the N96 but the touch version is too cluttered and it disconnects from 3G very frequently.

Interface: 2.5/5
Usability/Functionality: 4/5
Stability: 2/5
Total score: 8.5 out of 15

Download from

2nd place: MSN Messenger

MSN China has did it once… building an MSN Messenger app for users. It was great as it has 90% of the compute version of MSN Messenger… but for a period of time, it didn’t work and thus the news died down after that.

Fret not! The app is now brought alive again and is again usable on touch devices! I love the interface as it resembles the original MSN, has sound alerts and other features like contacts profile photo, search contacts etc. One thing I dont like: The buttons and text are too small for fingers to touch.

Interface: 4/5
Usability/Functionality: 3/5
Stability: 3/5
Total score: 10 out of 15

1st place: Palringo

Palringo was famous with it’s push-to-talk apps back in the N95 era. They have slowly evolved into a messenger app and now they support most of the messengers out there like MSN, Yahoo, Gtalk, Facebook etc. The interface is very simple, loads very quickly and easy to use. It has never got disconnected from 3G since the day I started using it til now. IT still has features like sending photo and voice(utilising their famous push-to-talk) technology.

1 thing that i dont quite like is that it lacks of the ’search contacts’ feature.

Interface: 3.5/5
Usability/Functionality: 4.5/5
Stability: 5/5
Total score: 13 out of 15

Download from

What do you think of these FREE messenger apps? Do you have any favorite messenger apps that you use on your phone? Leave a comment and let us know! :D

Remember the post about Youtube mobile got smarter?

Now they have made the S60 app smarter too! Well not smarter but now it plays videos in fullscreen!

This is the default main screen. Notice the buttons on the right? It used to be there during playback too.

Search results are presented in filmstrips that can be swiped left or right. Tap on any of the thumbnail and the video will go fullscreen.

See how the controls take over the whole screen overlaying the video but it’s kinda upsetting to see the videos are not optimized for fullscreen playback yet.

Anyhow, just point your mobile browser to to get the app
